Description
the history of Carruades de Lafite
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the world's most famous wineries and is among the five Premier Grand Cru Classés of 1855. In addition to the Grand Vin, the estate also produces a second wine, Carruades de Lafite, named after a parcel on the estate. Since its first bottlings, Carruades de Lafite has been known for its elegance, finesse, and the recognizable Lafite signature, but in a more accessible style. Crafted with the same care and precision as the Grand Vin, it offers an excellent introduction to the grandeur of this iconic estate.
the terroir and the grape varieties
Lafite Rothschild's vineyards are located in Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc. Here, deep, gravelly soils rich in clay and limestone ensure perfect drainage and a natural concentration of the grapes. The climate is temperate, with the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde River moderating extreme temperatures. Nine carefully selected plots were used for Carruades de Lafite 2024. The blend consists of 47% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The fact that Merlot now outnumbers Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time makes this vintage unique.
the harvest year 2024
The 2024 growing season got off to a challenging start. From the end of the previous harvest until April, more than 1000 millimeters of rain fell. This led to exceptionally high powdery mildew pressure, which attacked the first leaves as early as April. Thanks to early and careful intervention, the damage was limited, although ultimately 10 to 15% of the harvest was lost. Furthermore, rain during flowering caused coloration in both Merlot and Cabernet, further limiting yields. The summer, on the other hand, was ideal, with stable and mild weather in July and August. The harvest took place from September 23rd to October 7th and yielded healthy grapes with excellent balance and aromatic tension.
vinification and style
The vinification of Carruades de Lafite follows the same philosophy as that of the Grand Vin. Each plot is vinified separately to optimally express the terroir. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, some new, which build complexity and structure without overpowering the fruit. The style of Carruades 2024 combines the classic precision of Pauillac with the charm of Merlot, resulting in a wine that is both accessible and profound.
color, smell and taste
The 2024 Carruades de Lafite opens with a pure nose of black cherry, cassis, and subtle graphite and pencil notes. On the palate, it reveals itself as medium-bodied, with freshness and a taut structure. The wine is well-balanced, with refined tannins, a light grip, and a hint of black truffle on the finish. Antonio Galloni describes it as a sensual and inviting wine, with notes of plum, black cherry, herbs, licorice, and spices. It is a Carruades with a charming, more Merlot-driven personality than usual, and a wine that immediately appeals.
reviews and storage potential
Professional tasters are unanimous in their praise for the 2024. Neal Martin (90-92) praises its purity, precision, and classic character, reminiscent of wines from thirty years ago. Antonio Galloni (91-93) calls it a rare, Merlot-driven Carruades that offers charm and immediate pleasure. James Suckling and other critics also place the wine in the upper 90-point range. Its aging potential is considerable: between 2029 and 2047, the wine will continue to develop, with a wonderful balance of fruit, tension, and elegance.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, the 2023 Carruades de Lafite is lovely, bursting with aromas of minty blackberries, cassis and cigar box, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate that's creamy and textural, its generous core of fruit largely concealing its powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a long, resonant finish.
Today, Château Lafite Rothschild amounts to some 110 hectares planted to some 900,000 vines (including 4.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon in Saint-Estèphe). If that figure strikes readers as smaller than it used to be, that's because Lafite has ripped up some less optimally situated plots that never tended to produce wine fit for inclusion in the grand vin. As of 2021, what's more, organic conversion is underway (15 hectares are already farmed biodynamically); and hedges and flowering borders, planted with native species, now begin to break up the monoculture of the vine. Cover crops, too, have been added to the viticultural team's agronomic arsenal and are delivering good results in parcels with more humid or clay-rich soils. In the winery, Lafite is meticulously traditional—the grapes are sorted twice, once optically, and see a classical maceration in wooden and cement tanks with pump-overs and some use of the "air pulse" system that disrupts the cap and oxygenates the ferment without the need for a full pump-over. Malolactic fermentation, as ever, is in tank, and the wine matures in barrels that are mostly produced in-house, with a light toast, favoring the forests of Allier and Nevers. Each vintage is racked three times, traditionally, with one egg white fining (which requires up to 8,000 eggs). As is the case almost everywhere in the Médoc, the tendency is for less and less Merlot in the assemblage.

A savory and juicy Carruades with softness and notes of ripe berry, cedar and dried tobacco. Like Lafite from the 1980s but more precise. Round and pretty. It really grows on the finish with such sweetness of fruit and length. Pointed, fine tannins at the end. Very long. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot.

2027 - 2047
The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is notable for some of the Cabernet being picked prior to the Merlot, between September 7 and 29. This year, there is no Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot in the blend. It has a far superior bouquet to some of the vintages I was tasting a decade or so ago—much more purity and precision, with notes of black plum, wild strawberry and a touch of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture and a crisp line of acidity. It’s fresh, precise and saline, with a long tail on the finish. This is surely one of the best Carruades I have tasted at this stage.

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild consists of three main areas: The slopes around the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a 4.5 hectare site in Saint-Estèphe. Its area is 112 hectares. The soil consists of fine, deeply ground mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained and well-incorporated tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Here the first stones were laid, the winegrowers' houses were built and prepared for something unusual to happen. As the years passed, the house overlooking this hill got bigger and a wisteria vine climbed the walls of generations of families to see how preserving this ecosystem has always been the ultimate priority. 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate our vineyard from the marshes. They, their children and grandchildren, the families of winegrowers die with them, work conscientiously to protect this impeccable creation that has been bequeathed to nature. They have taken great care to preserve this microcosm of forests and marshes, flora and fauna amidst the vines of Château Lafite Rothschild thrive in this almost wild osmosis.
As the ultimate witness to this protected land, some of the vines still gracefully show off their 140 years of ungrafted life. They escaped the phylloxera which, however, spared no one else! This infallible part of the vines continues to elude the winegrowers, the same ones who form, protect and nurture it, from one harvest year to the next, trying to refine this perfect composition that amazes them time and time again. It may not be a coincidence, of course, that Lafite earned the title of "First of the First" at Napoleon III's World's Fair. Nor will it be a coincidence, if others will speak of it long after us… Each barrel is tasted individually and only the best is selected for the final blend. After blending, the wine matures for 15 months in new oak barrels. Fermentation takes place for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Only vines older than 10 years are used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. While each vintage is unique, there is usually a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, with a small contribution of Petit Verdot.
