Château Lafite Rothschild 2025 undoubtedly ranks among the absolute stars of Bordeaux 2025. This Premier Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac combines aristocratic finesse with impressive precision and depth. The wine received exceptional ratings from international critics and already appears poised to become one of the most sought-after Lafite vintages of the decade.
Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most iconic wineries in Bordeaux and is known worldwide as one of the absolute benchmarks for classic Pauillac. Since the classification of 1855, Lafite has held the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé. The château's style is not about pure power, but rather about precision, refinement, and an almost effortless elegance that only the greatest terroirs can produce.
The estate is situated on one of the most beautiful gravel plateaus in Pauillac, where Cabernet Sauvignon ripens optimally and produces wines with exceptional aging potential. For generations, Lafite has managed to maintain a recognizable signature: refined, complex, and with an almost unparalleled balance between concentration and subtlety. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.
Origin and growing season in Pauillac
The 2025 growing season was marked by great contrasts. A wet winter was followed by an exceptionally dry spring and a hot summer. For Pauillac, two bursts of rain in June and July proved crucial. According to the château, these rain showers helped the vines weather the drought at precisely the right moment, preserving freshness and balance.
In August, the vines were under pressure, but the old vines remained remarkably vital. Approximately 60 mm of rain fell at the end of August. In hindsight, this amount proved to be just right, as the deep gravel and clay soils absorbed the water optimally. The result was a harvest with relatively modest yields, but grapes with an exceptional balance of ripeness, freshness, and tannin structure. The harvest took place from September 2 to 20.
Grapes and vinification
The blend of Château Lafite Rothschild 2025 consists of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. That exceptionally high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon immediately indicates where the strength of this vintage lies: refinement, structure, and longevity. The grapes were carefully harvested plot by plot, with only the best fruit selected for the grand vin.
A unique feature of this vintage is that 2025 is the last vintage to be vinified entirely in Lafite’s historic wooden vats. With this, the wine marks the end of an important chapter in the history of the château. During the long vinification, the Lafite team unanimously concluded that the wine possesses “the taste of the last of times and the best of times,” a fitting description for a wine that brings together tradition and the future.
Style and taste profile
Château Lafite Rothschild 2025 displays everything great Lafite is known for. Not a massive Pauillac trying to impress with power alone, but a wine of immense precision and detail. Expect refined aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, violets, graphite, and cedarwood, complemented by subtle spicy nuances and impressive minerality.
On the palate, the wine displays tension and refinement. The tannins are very precise and silky, while the freshness provides length and energy. What seems to make this 2025 so special is the combination of concentration and elegance. A wine with impressive depth, yet always in balance. As great Lafite ought to be, this vintage will also unfold slowly and presumably continue to evolve for decades.

Parker
A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2025 Lafite Rothschild unwinds in the glass with a deep and brooding bouquet of dark berries, violets, rose petals and pencil lead. Medium- to full-bodied, supple and layered, with suave tannins, good concentration and bright acidity, it checks in at 12.5% alcohol and an unusually low (by the standards of recent warm vintages at Lafite) pH of 3.65. Harvest began here on September 2, with the estate's old-vine Merlot beginning on September 3 and the first Cabernet Sauvignon coming in from September 11 (earlier than in 2022), and the harvest wrapped up on September 20.

Intense aromas of sweet tobacco, dark cedar, cigar humidor, mushroom, roses, and wet earth follow through to a medium to full body with firm, velvety tannins and a driven, intense finish. Very structured with bones. Reminds me of Lafite from the 1980s. Unique for the vintage. 12.5% alcohol. A blend of 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% petit verdot.

Vinous
The 2025 Lafite-Rothschild was cropped at 27 hl/ha between September 2 and 20. Eric Kohler mentioned that, unlike 2022, it underwent a longer maceration than usual because, after 24 days, he felt the wine was at ease with itself and there was no excess. That comes through completely on the deliriously intoxicating nose, replete with nuanced blackberry, bilberry and estuarine scents, all beautifully defined and seamlessly integrated with the 90% new oak that is made from Lafite’s own cooper. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins. It is blessed with extraordinary harmony and it is so well balanced that you almost overlook the weight and minéralité towards the finish. Just a dab of graphite lingers on the aftertaste. This is a very succinct and refined Lafite-Rothschild that I suspect will drink earlier than the 2022, yet will age with equal grace in bottle. I admit that, upon returning to my car, it was only then that I realised what a brilliant wine the 2025 Lafite-Rothschild is destined to become.

Tasting at Lafite-Rothschild with Saskia de Rothschild and winemaker Eric Kohler was one of the highlights of my trip. The Grand Vin is a contender for wine of the vintage. Low yields caused by the initiation florale, together with rainfall at the end of June and July (plus 55 mm at the end of August), were all key to the quality of the resulting wine. I have tasted Lafite-Rothschild from barrel since the late 1990s, and I can remember few that I found so seductive, so profound at this stage. Perhaps what has changed in recent years, apart from de Rothschild’s sense of momentum, is that there is slightly more body and grip to the First Growth. That is not to say it has the backbone and density of Latour, but it has more presence than it had 10 or 15 years ago. This is also reflected in the vastly improved Carruades de Lafite. No, the 2025 Lafite-Rothschild is not going to be cheap. But it is going to be astounding.
The 2025 Lafite-Rothschild is powerful and explosive in the glass. Dark cherry/plum fruit, graphite, new leather, graphite, licorice and lavender race across the palate. A Pauillac of mid-weight structure, the 2025 impresses with its tension and deep, layered personality. Even in the early going, the Grand Vin is so vivid, so expressive. I can't wait to taste it in finished form. For those who love data

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild consists of three main areas: The slopes around the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a 4.5 hectare site in Saint-Estèphe. Its area is 112 hectares. The soil consists of fine, deeply ground mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained and well-incorporated tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Here the first stones were laid, the winegrowers' houses were built and prepared for something unusual to happen. As the years passed, the house overlooking this hill got bigger and a wisteria vine climbed the walls of generations of families to see how preserving this ecosystem has always been the ultimate priority. 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate our vineyard from the marshes. They, their children and grandchildren, the families of winegrowers die with them, work conscientiously to protect this impeccable creation that has been bequeathed to nature. They have taken great care to preserve this microcosm of forests and marshes, flora and fauna amidst the vines of Château Lafite Rothschild thrive in this almost wild osmosis.
As the ultimate witness to this protected land, some of the vines still gracefully show off their 140 years of ungrafted life. They escaped the phylloxera which, however, spared no one else! This infallible part of the vines continues to elude the winegrowers, the same ones who form, protect and nurture it, from one harvest year to the next, trying to refine this perfect composition that amazes them time and time again. It may not be a coincidence, of course, that Lafite earned the title of "First of the First" at Napoleon III's World's Fair. Nor will it be a coincidence, if others will speak of it long after us… Each barrel is tasted individually and only the best is selected for the final blend. After blending, the wine matures for 15 months in new oak barrels. Fermentation takes place for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Only vines older than 10 years are used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. While each vintage is unique, there is usually a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, with a small contribution of Petit Verdot.
