the history of Seña
Seña was born in 1995 from an ambitious project by Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi. Their goal: to create a wine that would demonstrate Chile's ability to produce world-class wines. With its first vintage, released in 1997, Seña immediately established itself as Chile's first truly iconic wine. The project marked a turning point and paved the way for other ultra-premium Chilean wines. Today, Seña is among the most recognized names in the international wine world. For the past fifteen years, the wine has also been produced biodynamically, with respect for nature and terroir at its core.
vineyard and terroir
Seña's vineyards are located in the Aconcagua Valley, north of Santiago and not far from the Pacific Ocean. This location creates an ideal microclimate: warm days that promote optimal ripeness, combined with cooling sea breezes and nighttime coolness, which preserve freshness. The soils consist of loam, clay, and volcanic rock, which contribute to the wine's structure and mineral tension. This unique terroir gives Seña its characteristic depth and layering.
the 2023 harvest year
The 2023 vintage is characterized as warmer than previous years, but the winemakers succeeded in maintaining the balance between ripe fruit, freshness, and elegance. Thanks to careful vineyard management and biodynamic methods, the team was able to harvest grapes that are both powerful and refined. The blend consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, 15% Carménère, and 6% Petit Verdot. This composition results in a wine that is rich in fruit yet complex and refined. The wine was aged for 18 months, 90% in French barriques (70% new) and 10% in foudres, which adds structure and subtle oak notes without overpowering the fruit.
vinification and maturation
All grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. After fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barriques, followed by a year and a half of aging in primarily new French oak. This approach gives Seña 2023 its characteristic balance of power and elegance, with silky tannins, a refined structure, and a complex aromatic profile. Thanks to the combination of barrique and foudre, the wine retains its freshness and gains an added dimension of minerality.
tasting notes of the 2023 Seña
The color is deep ruby red. On the nose, the wine opens with an expressive and layered bouquet of red berries, cassis, mint, and spices, with subtle notes of graphite, cedar, and vanilla. On the palate, the wine reveals ripe cherries, blueberries, and plums, complemented by nuances of cocoa, tobacco, and fine herbs. The tannins are soft and polished, making the wine more approachable and friendly than in cooler vintages. The finish is long, mineral, and refined, with a hint of saltiness that gives the wine tension.
Wine Advocate (96/100) praised the fresh style and called the wine impressively balanced, with mineral undertones and an elegant, lingering finish. James Suckling (99/100) emphasized the refinement, drinkability, and depth, calling the wine one of the most accessible and refined Señas of recent years.
why order Seña 2023?
Seña 2023 demonstrates that even a warmer year can produce a truly world-class wine. It's a wine that combines power and elegance, with a more accessible profile than previous vintages, without sacrificing complexity. With its balance, depth, and impressive reviews, it's an iconic wine that belongs in the cellar of every serious connoisseur and sommelier. Seña can be enjoyed now, but it also has the potential to develop further over the next twenty years.

Using a higher proportion of Carménère than is typical, the 2023 Seña opens with its signature fresh, lifted bouquet driven by mint, spice and red fruit aromas, developing graphite accents and a vanilla-tinged undercurrent with aeration. The palate beautifully balances a suave polish with tensile focus, releasing into a rich, slow-moving finish underpinned by mineral-driven nuances and a touch of refreshing salinity. This impressive showing from Seña in a warm vintage retains admirable freshness and verve. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, 15% Carménère, 6% Petit Verdot matured for 18 months in barrique and a small portion of foudre.

This cabernet sauvignon really shines, with subtle paprika, tobacco ash and vibrant red currants on the nose. Nuanced blackberries, blueberries, fine spices and a hint of cigar box. This fresh, lovely Sena comes from a warmer year than 2021 or 2022, with softer tannins. It’s super refined but driven, long and flavorful. More approachable and less structured and direct this year, with impeccable drinkability. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% malbec, 15% carmenere and 6% petit verdot. 18 months of aging, of which 90% is in French oak barrels, including 70% new and around 10% in foudres. Drinkable now, but it’s built for the next 20 years.

The Viña Seña winery is located in Valle de Aconcagua. It was founded in 1995 by two charismatic winemakers: the Chilean Eduardo Chadwick, the owner of Viña Errazurriz and legendary Californian Robert Mondavi. What started as an ambitious dream at the time - producing a world-class wine in Chile - has now found countless followers. Nevertheless, the Seña remains in a class of its own. The futuristic bodega, designed by the Chilean star architect Germán del Sol, is spectacular. But the main property of the winery is the 42 hectares of vineyards, surrounded by breathtaking nature on various soils and planted with cabernet sauvignon, carmenère, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, malbec and syrah. In short, the traditional varieties. The conditions for growing wine are so good here that you can work organically without tools. Needless to say, a winery like Viña Seña has the very best and most modern technology in the wine cellar. The responsible oenologist has been Francisco Baettig since 2003, a student of Michel Laroche and Michel Rolland. The latter has even improved the five most recent volumes of the Seña. The joint venture with Robert Mondavi ended in 2005, but the visionary's spirit is still ubiquitous. Viña Seña is one of the greatest icons of the wine world.
