Description
Viña Casa Marín was founded in 2000 by winemaker Maria Luz Marín, who had one thing in mind: to make 'terroir wines' in Chile. Her project was both innovative and daring, but she is now loved and praised and an example for many others in Chile! María Luz is the first female winemaker and winery in Chile. After graduating from the University of Chile with a degree in agronomy and winemaking, Maria Luz worked in various wineries, including Romanee Contie. She has successfully positioned her fine, delicate wines in the top markets and among international critics, where they stand out for their high quality. Today, Vina Casa Marín is among the best in Chile and is a model of fine, elegant cool-climate wines.
María Luz is clear: the Cipreses is 'the flagship in our portfolio'. This wine has already been named the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world twice (Concours Mondial du Sauvignon and Decanter World Wine Awards). The basis for this lies in the vineyard. It is rich in granite and slate, and benefits from the coolness of the Humboldt River. The vines are planted on a hill, in rows that run from north to south. Thanks to an optimal sun exposure, the grapes ripen perfectly and get the best out of the special soil of red clay, volcanic material and limestone. A wine full of character, depth and richness, and a perfect expression of the chalky terroir of Lo Abarca. Delicious sauvignon aromas of gooseberry and freshly mown grass burst out of the glass. The taste is pure and clean, and offers notes of stone fruit, citrus fruit and minerals.

The product of extremely low yields of under four tons per hectare, the 2024 Sauvignon Blanc Cipreses Vineyard is one of the brightest, most citrus-driven Sauvignon Blancs I tasted in Chile. Opening with a pure, clean and subtly flinty nose, the palate is similarly high-toned and crunchy, drenched in acidity but lacking a bit of tension, to my palate. It concludes with a beamingly bright finish, again dominated by all manner of citrus notes.

A subtle, acid-driven sauvignon blanc that is bone-dry and pithy. Chalk, mineral and lime aromas extend to the flavors on the palate, with sharpened acidity and a well-textured finish. A chalky and gastronomic sauvignon blanc that’s nothing ostentatious. Chalky finish. Vegan. Sustainable. Drink now or hold.

From: The Chilean Coast: Where the Pacific Shapes Vibrant Reds and Whites (Jul 2024)
Sourced from clay and limestone soils in San Antonio in a cold vintage, the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Cipreses Vineyard is like a sharpened blade. It features aromas of lime, yellow pepper and mint, with a rue and herbal core. On the palate, it offers elevated acidity that tempers the intensely lemony flow. This is a delicious white, perfect for seafood and a testament to the seriousness of coastal Sauvignon Blancs in Chile.

Her project was innovative and daring, but she is now loved and praised and an example for many others in Chile! For several years, María Luz has been assisted by her son Felipe, a winemaker who gives shape to his mother's dream with the same passion and drive. Today the domain has 50 hectares of vineyard divided into 38 different plots. Much of the vineyard is located on limestone and granite soils. These conditions result in vines that can produce superior quality fruit. All grapes are harvested by hand, only when they are perfectly ripe. Due to the great diversity in terroirs and grape varieties, coupled with the cool climate, the harvest takes a very long time; from the beginning of March to the end of May! All harvested grapes are vinified separately in small vats.
