Description
The Encruzado Reserva Quinta da Falorca is made from 95% of the finest white grape from the Daô region – the Encruzado. This grape is often compared to top Burgundy wines for its refinement, complexity, and aging potential. This grape has the ability to maintain a near-perfect balance of sugars and acidity. It produces dry, fruity, and aromatic wines and is one of Portugal's top white grape varieties. This grape has exceptional aging potential, as evidenced by this white wine from Quinta da Falorca, which can easily remain in your cellar or wine refrigerator until 2033. The wine has been aged 15% in new French oak and 85% in stainless steel, and has a perfect alcohol content of 13%, making it elegant.
This is a fine Encruzado, persistent and focused, with good acidity and concentration. The oak is supportive rather than overpowering, thus preserving its purity. This Branco from Portugal has developed beautiful aromas of roses, violets, and also lemon and minerality. The richness is impressive, and the excellent acidity maintains a pleasant tension. The Encruzado Reserva is an impressive white wine with excellent value.
The wine receives high ratings year after year.

1. Grilled chicken with lemon and thyme
The wine's citrus notes complement the freshness of the lemon beautifully. The oak-aged structure of the wine harmonizes with the grilled, lightly caramelized chicken. Thyme enhances the wine's spicy character.
2. Baked cod with creamy leek sauce
The richness of the sauce is perfectly balanced by the wine's fresh acidity. Cod is a delicate fish that pairs well with the mineral and floral character of Encruzado.
3. Risotto with mushrooms and Parmesan cheese
The umami of the mushrooms and cheese complements the depth and light oak notes in the wine. The creamy texture of the risotto complements the body of the wine.
4. Salad with goat cheese, walnuts and honey dressing
The wine's freshness cuts beautifully through the fat of the cheese. The floral notes complement the honey, and the walnut complements the subtle woody notes in the wine.
5. Baked scallops with cauliflower puree
The refinement of scallops demands a wine with elegance and structure. The cauliflower purée emphasizes the wine's roundness, while the mineral-brown scallops play beautifully with the Encruzado's vibrancy.

The 2021 Encruzado Reserva Quinta da Falorca (it also has 5% Malvasia, because some Malvasia vines are sprinkled in the field blend) was partly (only 15%) aged for two months in new French oak and the rest in stainless steel. It comes in near bone dry and at 12.9% alcohol. The winemaker said this was a low-production, fresh year with good quality. This doesn't project much mid-palate depth, but it is very elegant, bright and expressive. The good acidity should allow this to age a reasonable time. The finesse makes this a strong finisher, even if it is a slow starter. It sneaks up on you in terms of appreciation. It may be better next year.

The 2020 Encruzado Reserva Quinta da Falorca (it also has 5% Malvasia, because some Malvasia vines are sprinkled in the field blend) was partly (only 15%) aged for two months in new French oak and the rest in stainless steel. It comes in near bone dry and at 12.9% alcohol. There was a time when I did not pay much attention to this winery's white wines, but they certainly have gotten it right. They excel most every year now. This has fine concentration and coats the palate beautifully. In the meanwhile, there is a bit of tension and a somewhat juicy finish with a bright demeanor. Granting that both are not here together, I'm not sure this is quite as impressive as the 2019, but this 2020 has many merits of its own. It drinks great. It should hold throughout most of the decade, more or less, and it may yet get better. There were 3,744 bottles and 100 magnums produced from 60-plus-year-old vines.

Located in Pindelos or Silgueiros, Quinta da Falorca is the reference model and top wine house from the Portuguese Dão. No volumes but only quality. It is therefore quite difficult to get a Quinta da Falorca and especially their high-end wines. This is due to a number of factors, namely:
- unprecedented fine wines
- made in very small quantities
- and still very affordable
Quinta da Falorca is one of the secret heroes of the international wine world: winegrowers such as the quality-striving Carlos Figueiredo, who values his native Dão and the local terroir, but also produces world-class wines. Among his wines, wine lovers will find the individuality that is often lost in times of increasing globalization of the wine taste: authentic, traditionally prepared wines with a radiant regional character, made from indigenous grape varieties in a limited edition.
