Description
Domäne Serrig and Markus Molitor
The history of Domäne Serrig dates back to the 19th century, when it was established as a Prussian state estate on the steep slopes along the Saar River. The area was known early on for its exceptional terroir. In 2016, Markus Molitor, one of Germany's most influential winemakers, took over the estate with the goal of restoring it to its former glory. Molitor is world-renowned for his unparalleled precision in Riesling production and now owns over 120 hectares of vineyards along the Mosel and Saar rivers.
Molitor's vision is to create Rieslings that both reflect the region's classic style and offer exceptional long-term aging. He works exclusively with mass selection, high planting density, and fully manual cultivation of the extremely steep slopes. This means each vine receives intensive care, ensuring the grapes optimally express their character and terroir. The Domäne Serrig Vogelsang is one of the flagship wines of this project.
The terroir of the Saar
The Vogelsang vineyard is situated on a steep, south-facing slope above the Saar River. The soil consists primarily of weathered slate, rich in minerals and excellent at retaining heat. This combination of slope, soil type, and microclimate ensures slow and even ripening of the Riesling grapes, ensuring perfect balance between aromas and acidity.
The 2022 growing season was exceptionally hot and dry. To protect the young vines and prevent stress, yields were drastically reduced. Molitor also uses mulch with herbs and straw to retain moisture and enrich the humus layer. This maintains the vineyard's vitality, even in challenging years.
Vinification and maturation of the 2022 Vogelsang Kabinett
The grapes for the 2022 Vogelsang Kabinett were harvested entirely by hand at around 80° Oechsle, a good two to three weeks earlier than those for the Grosse Lage. The harvest was rigorously selected to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit reached the press. Pressing was carried out using a traditional basket press, which operates gently and slowly to preserve the pure and refined must.
Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in large 3,000-liter wooden barrels. Some of the wine was also aged in stainless steel to preserve the fresh fruit aromas. Both portions remained on the fine lees until July of the following year, which added complexity and a velvety texture. The resulting style is a classic Saar-Kabinett: light-bodied in alcohol (9.5%), with a refined balance of sweetness and lively acidity.
Tasting note of the 2022 Kabinett Vogelsang
The wine has a crystal-clear, pale yellow color with green highlights. The nose opens intensely yet refined, with aromas of pineapple, tropical stone fruit, and fresh lemon oil, complemented by floral notes and a salty minerality reminiscent of sea salt and wet slate. There's also a subtle hint of brown sugar and candied lemon, adding depth to the bouquet.
On the palate, the wine is light, almost weightless, yet highly expressive. The sweet impression of ripe fruit is immediately balanced by vibrant, salty acidity. This gives the wine tension and length, with a refined grip that makes the finish intense and invigorating. The balance is so refined that the wine is simultaneously frivolous and serious. According to international critics, this 2022 is one of the most elegant and classic interpretations of Kabinett in the Saar.
Maturation potential
Despite its light character, this is not a wine to be quickly forgotten. Thanks to its perfect acidity and minerality, the 2022 Vogelsang Kabinett can last for decades. The Wine Advocate praises this cuvée for its precision, finesse, and seductive drinkability, with a recommended drinking window well into 2060. For lovers of classic German Riesling, this vintage offers a unique opportunity to experience a Kabinett as it was originally intended: complex, nuanced, and long-lasting.
A rare Cabinet from a large estate
Production of the 2022 Vogelsang Kabinett is significantly smaller than in previous years due to challenging vineyard conditions. Consequently, the wine is available in limited quantities, making it particularly attractive to collectors and connoisseurs. Exclusive distribution through La Place de Bordeaux underscores the international appeal of this Riesling.

Markus Molitor's Saar Domäne Serrig 2022 Kabinett Vogelsang is remarkably pure, saline and intense on the nose, intermingling lush pineapple and tropical stone fruit aromas with notes of crystalline rocks, lemon oil and sea salt. It is certainly much more reductive than wines not coming from the Mosel and not being bottled with residual sugar. 2022 was an extremely warm and dry vintage, so Molitor's team in Serrig had to reduce yields dramatically in order to rescue the predominantly young vines. However, the nose doesn't show any hints of stress. This is a pure, fresh and savory as well as intense and slightly flinty-flavored Riesling from weathered slate, and it shows an iron-like twist with candied lemon notes and brown sugar on the nose. Lush yet crystalline and refined, this is an intense and very elegant yet weightless Kabinett whose richness is uplifted by a saline acidity and gorgeous finesse. This is a featherlight yet perfectly ripe, quite complex, immediately mouthwatering and aromatic Kabinett with sweet pineapple aromas, fine grip and, initially, the sharpness of a slate plate that becomes rounder with aeration. The Kabinett Prädikat is not interpreted as particularly light in terms of bright and airy Riesling here but instead a serious vin de terroir in the typical Saar style: light, crystalline, precise and saline but also hedonistic without being all too rich. This is a highly stimulating 2022 Kabinett with full ripeness, good concentration and a long, intense and aromatic finish with fine grip and mouthwatering salinity. It's a great, filigreed yet intense Kabinett in the style of a Kabinett that used to be, in the Rheingau of the early 20th century, the best wine of the vintage. 9.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2025.
2022 is the third vintage of Markus Molitor's Domäne Serrig, a former Prussian state property in the Saar Valley that he acquired in 2016 and is still restoring according to the original plans. Twenty-three of the potential 40+ hectares of the steep, predominantly south-facing slope are planted with Riesling, of which only five hectares are 20 to 25 years old, whereas the rest were planted at a high density between 2017 and 2019 with their own massal selections from the Mosel and Alsace. The yields were kept significantly low in 2022 due to the extreme drought and heat of the summer months, even though the soils are not extremely rocky and Molitor's vineyard culture focuses on humus formation. In addition to planting herbs between the rows, he spreads straw during the summer months to cover the soil and keep it moist, enriching it with humus as it decomposes.
2022 was not a perfect year for Kabinett, which is available but only in significantly smaller quantities than in the previous two years. It was harvested at around 80° Oechsle about two to three weeks before the grapes for the Grosse Lage, which, in the 2022 vintage, is just above the legal limit for dry and is actually a semi-dry or off-dry Riesling. For both wines, the handpicked grapes are pressed in a basket press and fermented spontaneously in 3,000-liter barrels, with half of the Kabinett also aged in stainless steel tanks. Both Rieslings were left on the lees until July of the following year and were bottled in the summer of last year. They will be released this fall—as always, exclusively through the Place de Bordeaux.

Staggeringly youthful for a wine from such a hot and dry year. But that’s what makes the Saar so special. Wonderful combination of ripeness and delicacy, with peaches and spring blossoms on the nose. What makes the barely medium-bodied palate so remarkable is the way the succulence flips to mouthwatering freshness in the stunningly vibrant finish. Only 9.5% alcohol. Drink or hold.

DOMÄNE SERRIG was founded in 1904 as a royal Prussian state domain in the Saar Valley; one of the largest and most avant-garde state domains of its time. The domain was privatized in the late 1980s and later taken over by Markus Molitor in 2016.
