We can offer these gems directly from the wineries at very attractive prices (well below market), often wines that are no longer available or unaffordable. So, the wines come directly from the wineries and haven't traveled halfway around the world in questionable circumstances.

history and ownership of château giscours

Château Giscours is one of the classic names of Margaux and has held the status of Troisième Grand Cru Classé since 1855. The estate in Labarde has a history dating back to the sixteenth century and has developed over the centuries into a mosaic of elevated gravel terraces. In recent decades, significant investments have been made in vineyard management and cellar infrastructure, with the aim of achieving greater precision and consistency in each vintage. Giscours's identity is one of elegance and length, with wines that seek harmony between ripeness, refinement, and ageing potential.

Margaux, climate and terroir: why 2022 excels

Margaux benefits from a temperate maritime climate with mild winters and sunny, dry summers. The deep layers of gravel and sand provide excellent drainage and heat retention, while clay and limestone in the subsoil preserve freshness. In 2022, vines with deep roots performed particularly well. Thanks to their access to moisture reserves, they yielded concentrated yet balanced grapes. Adapted leaf and shoot management limited hydric stress and supported ripening while maintaining freshness. The result is a vintage with ripe fruit, brilliant texture, and remarkably fine tannins.

2022 Château Giscours: grapes, harvest and vinification

The Grand Vin is traditionally based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with accents of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. In 2022, a large portion of the blend comes from old vineyards, with a substantial proportion of vines over fifty years old. Harvesting was carried out in multiple passes per plot. Younger vines were picked first, followed by older vines at their optimal ripeness, in each row. This phased approach yielded fruit with a perfect balance of sugar ripeness, phenolic ripeness, and acid structure. Fermentation was temperature-controlled with gentle extraction. Aging took place in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new wood intended to polish the texture without masking the estate character.

Tasting notes: color, aroma, and taste of the 2022 Giscours

The color is deep purple-red with violet hues. The nose opens with ripe blackberries and cherries, a cool touch of mint, and floral hints of rose petals. Mineral and pencil-like nuances add further refinement. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered, and enveloping, supported by lively acidity. The tannins are silky and almost powdery in texture, creating an elegant finish. The palate evolves from juicy dark fruit to subtle spice, cedar, and a graphite depth. The finish is long and resonant, with a beautiful precision that beckons you to sip again.

assessment and storage potential for sommeliers, enthusiasts and investors

The 2022 Giscours is highly regarded by leading tasters, receiving 96 points. Its quality is partly attributed to the high proportion of old vines and the precise harvesting strategy per pass, which explains the sweetness and refinement of the tannins. The recommended drinking window is between 2030 and 2065. For the sommelier, this represents a benchmark wine within Margaux with clear gastronomic potential. For the serious wine consumer, the wine already offers great promise after decanting, while patience is richly rewarded. For the investor, the rarity, reputation, and proven demand for top vintages of this château are factors that favor its value retention and potential long-term appreciation.

serving suggestions and gastronomic approach

The structure and freshness call for refined cuisine. Think rack of lamb with rosemary, veal sweetbreads with morels, pigeon with lentils, or classic tournedos with red wine jus. Choose dishes that respect texture and juiciness. Ideally, serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (62 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit) and allow young bottles to air for 1 to 2 hours in a carafe during their first few years. Glassware with a tulip-shaped bowl emphasizes the floral and graphite notes.

Giscours was in a dubious state when Nicolas Tari acquired it in 1954. Substantial investments followed and quality improved by leaps and bounds. In 1995 Giscours came into the possession of the Dutch grocer (supermarkets to Super de Boer and Edah) Eric Albada Jelgersma, who also invested heavily here, just like at his other Château du Tertre property and further improved the quality through a rigorous replanting and replanting program. The cellars were shed and new equipment was purchased. Today Giscours is again “the grand seigneur” it once was and worthy of a 3rd cru. With 200 ha of which 80 ha of vineyard one of the greatest assets in the Médoc.
