Description
Château Giscours: a rich history in the Margaux appellation
Château Giscours is one of the leading Grand Cru Classés in the Margaux appellation and was officially classified as a Troisième Cru in 1855. The estate has a history dating back to the 14th century. Since 1995, it has been owned by the Dutch Albada Jelgersma family. Under the leadership of general manager Alexander van Beek and a dedicated team of specialists, they work with meticulous attention to detail to create wines with character and finesse. Giscours is located in Labarde, in the southern part of Margaux, where the renowned deep, gravelly soils ensure excellent drainage and ripening.
Location, soil and climate: ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon
The 95 hectares of vineyards are planted on deep Garonne gravel soils that retain heat and drain rainwater. These characteristics are ideal for the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which plays a key role at Giscours. The oceanic climate with warm summers and moderate autumn temperatures contributes to a slow, harmonious ripening of the grapes. The estate is renowned for its biodiversity, with 240 hectares of forests and meadows contributing to a healthy ecosystem.
Grape composition and harvest for Château Giscours 2024
The 2024 blend consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Harvest took place from September 19 to October 11, 2024, with multiple passes through the vineyard to ensure optimal phenolic ripeness. The grapes were carefully selected through manual and optical sorting. Thanks to the excellent climatic conditions during the summer, a wonderful balance between freshness and ripeness was achieved.
Vinification and maturation in French oak barrels
Vinification took place in concrete and stainless steel tanks with a maceration period of 35 days at 28°C. The wine was then aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new. Gentle extraction, natural yeast fermentation, and minimal intervention were used to allow the terroir to express itself as purely as possible. This meticulous approach enhances the wine's elegance and aromatic expression.
Color, aroma and taste of Château Giscours 2024
The Château Giscours 2024 displays a deep, garnet-red color. The nose opens with intense black fruit—such as blackcurrant and blackberry—followed by floral notes of violets and hints of spice. On the palate, the wine is full, juicy, and complex. The tannins are polished and well-integrated, supported by lively acidity. The finish is long, mineral, and powerful, with an energetic freshness that elegantly rounds out the whole. The wine promises excellent aging potential.
