How does this wine taste?

How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.

The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.

How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.

How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Margaux and the 2021 vintage

Margaux is known for its elegant and aromatic wines, combining Cabernet Sauvignon with finesse and floral nuances. The deep gravel soils provide good drainage and give the wines their characteristic structure and freshness.

The 2021 vintage experienced a cool and challenging growing season. For producers with careful selection, this resulted in wines with moderate alcohol, fresh acidity, and a more restrained power. At Rauzan-Ségla, this resulted in a wine with classic tension, clarity, and a clear focus on balance.

Vineyards and terroir of Rauzan-Ségla

The Rauzan-Ségla vineyards are spread across some of Margaux's finest parcels. The soils consist primarily of deep gravel layers with sand and clay in the subsoil, ensuring even ripening and aromatic precision.

The plots are harvested and vinified separately. This approach allows the characteristics of each terroir to be carefully integrated into the final blend.

Grape varieties and composition

The 2021 Château Rauzan-Ségla is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon defines the character with structure, freshness, and aging potential.

Merlot provides roundness and texture, while the other varietals contribute aromatic complexity and spice. The blend reflects a classic Margaux style with an emphasis on refinement.

Harvest and vinification

The harvest was carried out with strict selection in the vineyard to select only perfectly ripe fruit. Due to the cool year, timing was crucial to maintain the balance between ripeness and freshness.

Fermentation took place with controlled extraction, focusing on finesse and precision. The oak aging was carefully calibrated so that the wood and fruit blend harmoniously without becoming dominant.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red color. The aroma is intense and layered, with notes of blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry, complemented by hints of graphite, mint, cedarwood, baking chocolate, and subtle vanilla.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a velvety texture and a core of pure fruit. The tannins are polished and refined, while fresh acidity adds tension and length. The finish is long, precise, and classic in style.

Structure, style and storage potential

The 2021 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine clearly built for the long haul. The style is understated and classic, emphasizing structure and balance over immediate power.
