Description
Markus Molitor and the Juffer-Sonnenuhr vineyard
Weingut Markus Molitor is known worldwide as an icon of the Mosel region. His wines are praised for their precision, purity, and long aging potential. The Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr is one of the region's most famous Grand Cru vineyards. This steep, blue-slate slope overlooks the Mosel and enjoys a warm microclimate perfect for the late-ripening Riesling grape.
The Juffer-Sonnenuhr is known for its finesse, delicacy, and salty minerality. In the hands of Markus Molitor, this results in a Riesling with impressive length, structure, and dry intensity.
Terroir, selection and vinification
The old Riesling vines in the Juffer-Sonnenuhr winery produce low yields with great aromatic intensity. Harvesting takes place manually in multiple passes per plot, selecting only the healthiest and optimally ripe grapes. The grapes are then gently pressed using a traditional basket press. Spontaneous fermentation occurs with natural yeasts in large wooden vats, followed by eight to ten months of aging on the fine lees.
The "White Capsule" designation indicates a dry Auslese style . For Molitor, this means maximum intensity while maintaining freshness, purity, and terroir expression. The wine is bottled unfiltered under natural cork.
Robert Parker's Review – The Wine Advocate
Stephan Reinhardt awarded this wine 97 points , describing it as "pure and very delicate" with a flinty and spicy nose, characteristic of the Juffer-Sonnenuhr terroir. On the palate, it reveals itself as intense, round, fruity, and salty, with an exceptionally long, persistent finish. A "fabulous Brauneberg grand cru," according to Reinhardt. He recommends drinking the wine between 2024 and 2070 , underscoring its impressive aging potential.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a bright, golden yellow color. The aroma is refined and complex, with notes of flint, white peach, lemon zest, herbs, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, it is taut and elegant, with ripe yellow fruit, salty minerality, and delicate acidity. The structure is intense yet perfectly balanced, with a long, energetic, and slightly salty finish. A wine with great tension and definition.
Serving tips and storage potential
Serve slightly chilled at 9 to 10 degrees Celsius in a large Riesling glass. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will develop over decades. The aromatic depth will deepen further, with tertiary aromas of honey, spices, and tobacco potentially emerging. Keep until at least 2070 .

The 2020 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) is pure and very delicate on the flinty and spicy nose that represents the specific finesse of the Juffer-Sonnenuhr terroir. Intense and savory on the palate, this is a round and fruity as well as savory Riesling with a long, intense and persistently saline finish. A fabulous Brauneberg grand cru! 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Geisenheim in September 2023.
When Markus Molitor came all the way to Geisenheim to show me the two Saar Rieslings from his Domäne Serrig, I had just finished my tasting of the 2021 and 2022 Rheingau Rieslings with Johannes Leitz. I had asked Molitor to brig me some of his top wines to have a context for his new Saar wines. Although I tasted all the wines a while before and it was still too early to see how they had developed so soon after the bottling, I took the chance to give an update. Although our system will handle the new scores as a kind of new or updated rating, I ask you to handle these notes with caution and see them only in context with my previous notes. Molitor's Rieslings develop very slowly, and new reviews normally do not make much sense except after eight to 10 years later. The only stunning finding I had comparing the Serrig wines with the wines listed here is that the established Markus Molitor Rieslings taste much more reductive and aloof than the upcoming releases of Domäne Serrig even though they are more or less made the same way: handpicked, basket pressed and fermented with natural yeasts in large oak casks for eight to 10 months. The SO2 doses are similar, and yet there is a difference not just of terroir but also of style. While the established 2020 Molitor Rieslings are still sleepers, the Serrig Rieslings are currently singing and of incomparable brightness and finesse.

This highly-structured youthful dry Mosel is only just beginning to open to reveal its abundant treasures. The compact core of crushed rock minerality is wrapped in juicy fruit on the medium-bodied palate (below 12% alcohol). Very stony and quite salty finish that’s still tightly wound. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
