Description
Schloss Johannisberg: an icon of Riesling
Schloss Johannisberg is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Germany. The wine estate is located in the heart of the Rheingau and is historically the birthplace of the Spätlese. With over 1,200 years of wine-growing history and a unique location above the Rhine, Schloss Johannisberg has a single vineyard of 50 hectares, planted entirely with Riesling. The current owner, the Oetker family, continues the centuries-old tradition with modern techniques and sustainable viticulture.
Unique location and terroir in the Rheingau
The vineyard surrounding the château is situated on a south-facing slope, formed from Taunus quartzite, fertile loess and loam, enriched with a touch of iron oxide. This mineral soil contributes to the depth and structure of the wine. The Rhine acts as a temperature regulator, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly. In combination with the altitude differences and the microclimate, this terroir is perfect for producing refined Rieslings with ageing potential.
The wines are the most elegant of the Rheingau region and gain in balance and suppleness as they age. Since 1748, a few bottles have been stored in the magnificent wine cellar, so that a unique collection has now been created. Once every 25 years, the wines are tested and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!
An exceptional vintage: 2020 Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack Spätlese
The 2020 vintage had an early spring and sunny summer, which resulted in healthy, golden grapes with excellent ripeness. The harvest took place more than two weeks earlier than average. Only the best grapes from the middle part of the Schlossberg were selected for this Spätlese.
Grapes, vinification and maturation
The wine is made from 100% Riesling and harvested by hand. After a gentle pressing, 90% fermented in stainless steel tanks and 10% in 1200-liter wooden barrels from our own oak from the castle forest. The maturation took place on the fine lees until bottling. This ensures a full structure and refined aromas.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of this Spätlese
The wine has a bright golden yellow color with green reflections. In the nose we find exotic fruits such as pineapple and mango, complemented by peach, nectarine and a hint of white flowers. In the mouth the wine is rich, elegant and structured with a lively acidity that perfectly balances the residual sweetness. The long finish leaves a fine spiciness and mineral character. This Spätlese combines exotic fruits with tension, complexity and refined sweetness.

Wine and food pairings with the Grünlack Spätlese
- Grilled pineapple with mascarpone and honey: the tropical fruit in the wine perfectly complements the sweet notes of the dish.
- Spicy yellow curry with shrimp: the freshness and residual sweetness balance the chili pepper and the spiciness of the sauce.
- Ripe Manchego with fig jam: the salt and umami of the cheese provide an exciting contrast to the elegantly sweet wine.
- Tarte Tatin with vanilla cream: the caramelized fruit is beautifully accentuated by the fruity and fresh character of the wine.
- Sushi with salmon and avocado: the soft mouthfeel and the sweet-fresh balance of the wine provide harmony with the texture of the sushi.
- Pan-fried foie gras with brioche and apple compote: rich flavours call for a wine with freshness and structure to carry it all.

The 2020 Riesling Spätlese Grünlack is precise and fine on the bright and delicately fruity and flinty nose that shows white peach aromas along with some flinty notes of crushed stones. Very elegant and crystalline on the palate, this is a stimulating Spätlese with great precision and finesse. The finish is stimulatingly salty and piquant. Excellent already today. 8% alcohol. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2021.
On June 20, 1716, Prince-Abbot Konstantin von Buttlar acquired the dilapidated buildings of the Electoral Mainz domain of Johannisberg and converted them into a private castle. Then, in 1720, he ventured into a viticultural experiment: He purchased 38,500 Riesling vines in Flörsheim, thus laying the foundation for what was probably the world's first closed Riesling vineyard, Schloss Johannisberger.
With the 2020 vintage, Schloss Johannisberg now presents its 300th vintage. For the anniversary, yet another new wine was launched (as if there were not already enough Rieslings from Johannisberg): the 2020 Fass Nr. 306 Ex Bibliotheca Subterranea. With the new vintage, director Stefan Doktor, who has continued to refine and broaden the style of the house in recent years, presents a relaunch of the Schloss Johannisberg labels, which makes the wines appear in a fresh but still historical style. In addition, because one doesn't treat oneself to anything else these days due to COVID, the Schloss team has taken over the previously leased restaurant, the Schlossschänke, under its own management.
Doktor offered me a rarity from the treasury, the Bibliotheca Subterranea, to try: a 1920 Schloss Johannisberger. Unfortunately, I could not accept the invitation at the time, and therefore will report about the 100-years-younger Rieslings that I tasted at another château, Schloss Gobelsburg in Austria, which became 850 years old this year. For the 100-year-old Schloss Johannisberger, there is certainly still enough time...

Very cool and reserved at the front, but this is an enormously deep and complex wine that has staggering mineral intensity. The lime and oolong-tea freshness effortlessly swallows up the unfermented grape sweetness, as if it didn’t really exist. Some will criticize, saying that this is too radical, but that’s what creates the great excitement! The herbal freshness at the finish is really astounding. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Schloss Johannisberg bottles "Qualitätswein" under a label with a yellow seal. The Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (quality wines with special properties) are classified as follows: Rotlach for the medium quality cabinet wines, Orangelach for the best cabinet wines, Grünlach for the average Spätlesen, Weisslach for the large Spätlesen, Rosalach for the Auslesen, Blaulach for the best qualities Auslese and Goldlach for the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen. Bad years do not deliver superior quality wine; The Auslesen with sky blue seal and the Beerenauslesen with gold seal will therefore not be found. Sometimes a sparkling wine is made from the lighter and less good Riesling wine, which is sold under the name Fürst von Metternich Prädikats-Sekt.
