Schloss Johannisberg: an icon of Riesling

Schloss Johannisberg is one of Germany's oldest and most prestigious wineries. Located in the heart of the Rheingau region, the estate is historically the birthplace of the Spätlese wine. With over 1,200 years of winemaking history and a unique location above the Rhine, Schloss Johannisberg boasts a 50-hectare single-vineyard vineyard planted entirely with Riesling. The current owners, the Oetker family, continue this centuries-old tradition using modern techniques and sustainable viticulture.

Unique location and terroir in the Rheingau

The vineyard surrounding the château is situated on a south-facing slope composed of Taunus quartzite, fertile loess, and clay, enriched with a touch of iron oxide. This mineral-rich soil contributes to the wine's depth and structure. The Rhine acts as a temperature regulator, ensuring the grapes ripen evenly. Combined with the elevation changes and microclimate, this terroir is perfect for producing refined Rieslings with ageing potential.

The wines are the most elegant of the Rheingau region and gain in balance and suppleness with age. Since 1748, a few bottles have been stored in the magnificent wine cellar, creating a unique collection. Every 25 years, the wines are tasted and corked. And, they assure us, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!

An exceptional vintage: 2020 Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack Spätlese

The 2020 vintage enjoyed an early spring and sunny summer, resulting in healthy, golden-yellow grapes with excellent ripeness. Harvest took place more than two weeks earlier than average. Only the best grapes from the middle section of the Schlossberg were selected for this Spätlese.

Grapes, vinification and maturation

The wine is made from 100% Riesling and harvested by hand. After a gentle pressing, 90% fermented in stainless steel tanks and 10% in 1200-liter oak barrels from the castle forest. Maturation took place on fine lees until bottling. This ensures a full structure and refined aromas.

Color, aroma and flavor profile of this Spätlese

The wine has a bright golden yellow color with green highlights. The nose reveals exotic fruits like pineapple and mango, complemented by peach, nectarine, and a hint of white flowers. On the palate, the wine is rich, elegant, and structured, with vibrant acidity that perfectly balances the residual sweetness. The long finish leaves a delicate spiciness and minerality. This Spätlese combines exotic fruits with tension, complexity, and refined sweetness.

Wine and food pairings with Grünlack Spätlese

  • Grilled pineapple with mascarpone and honey: the tropical fruit in the wine perfectly complements the sweet notes of the dish.
  • Spicy yellow curry with shrimp: the freshness and residual sweetness balance the chili pepper and spiciness of the sauce.
  • Ripe Manchego with fig jam: the saltiness and umami of the cheese create an exciting contrast with the elegantly sweet wine.
  • Tarte Tatin with vanilla cream: the caramelized fruit is beautifully accentuated by the fruity and fresh character of the wine.
  • Salmon and avocado sushi: the soft mouthfeel and sweet-fresh balance of the wine create harmony with the texture of the sushi.
  • Pan-fried foie gras with brioche and apple compote: rich flavours demand a wine with freshness and structure to carry it all.

Schloss Johannisberg bottles "Qualitätswein" under a label with a yellow seal. The Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (quality wines with special properties) are classified as follows: Rotlach for the medium quality cabinet wines, Orangelach for the best cabinet wines, Grünlach for the average Spätlesen, Weisslach for the large Spätlesen, Rosalach for the Auslesen, Blaulach for the best qualities Auslese and Goldlach for the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen. Bad years do not deliver superior quality wine; The Auslesen with sky blue seal and the Beerenauslesen with gold seal will therefore not be found. Sometimes a sparkling wine is made from the lighter and less good Riesling wine, which is sold under the name Fürst von Metternich Prädikats-Sekt.

Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau is undoubtedly Germany's most prestigious winery and the world renowned for its Rieslings. It is the oldest Riesling winery in the world. Wine has been made since 817 and 100% Riesling has been produced since 1720. The winery is centrally located in the area and has a rich history. Originally it was a monastery that was later used as a castle. It was even once owned by our royal family. The wines are the most elegant in the Rheingau area and gain in balance and flexibility as they age. In the beautiful wine cellar, a few bottles have been kept since 1748, so that now a unique collection has been created. Once every 25 years, the wines are inspected and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!
