Description
Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for over 800 years. This famous winery was founded in 1911 by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 his son Sebastian started working in the family business.
Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the recognizable style that Prüm wines are known for worldwide to this day. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, in charge. Today the winery is run by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm. The house is fully committed to growing Riesling. The majority of the vines have not been grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera aphid cannot survive between the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Golden Capsule) 2020 is incredibly clear and precise on the nose, and if there was any botrytis here – and there was, otherwise you wouldn't get this concentration and the delicate raisin aroma – it was perfect and came on the perfect moment. This is a kind of quintessence of the Sonnenuhr. On the palate this is a round and immediately stimulating Auslese with so much vitality and flavour, finishing with a tight and lasting mineral structure that makes this a great vin de terroir that can mature for decades. It is crystal clear and does not even taste sweet due to its spiciness and salt content. This is the essence of the JJ Prüm style! A fantastic wine that should not be opened again for fifteen years, although everyone would like to drink it now, except perhaps Dr. Manfred Prüm, who fell in love with the Lay Auslese instead because he was drinking now.

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is incredibly clear and precise on the nose, and if there was any botrytis here—and there was, otherwise you wouldn't get this concentration and delicate raisin aroma—it was perfect and came at the perfect moment. This is a kind of quintessence of the Sonnenuhr, and saying this, it makes me long for pure, freshly caught anchovies. On the palate, this is a therapeutic, round, savory and straightaway stimulating Auslese with so much vitality and savoriness, and it finishes with a tight and sustainable mineral structure that makes this a great vin de terroir that can be aged for decades. It is crystal clear and doesn't even taste sweet due to its piquancy and salinity. This is the quintessence of the JJ Prüm style! A fabulous wine that should not be opened for at least 15 years, although anyone would love to drink now, except maybe Dr Manfred Prüm, who instead fell in love with the Lay Auslese for drinking now. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 31 21 in July 2022.
Prüm's 2020s are without exception narrative Rieslings, shaped by their respective origins, which to taste always means pleasure and even relaxation but never real work. It will certainly not be easy for the 2021s to outdo the partly grandiose 2020s once these show fascinating clarity, finesse and elegance. Even Dr. Manfred Prüm, probably not a man of praise, had to admit at the end, "That was a highly enjoyable wine tasting; that's how I like it!" He wanted to explicitly praise his daughter Katharina for the 2020 vintage, but at the subsequent lunch he preferred to devote himself and us to two wines from the archive. Thank goodness Prüm wines speak for themselves anyway, so who needs praise?

Thursday, November 10, 2022
Country : Germany
Region : Mosel
Vintage : 2020
Score : 97
Although this is still very young, it shows fabulous aromatic complexity, the summer-flower, peach, apricot and passion-fruit aromas of breathtaking beauty. Very concentrated and super-filigree, the considerable ripeness beautifully balanced by mineral acidity that provides enormous vitality at the enormously detailed finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.
