Description
A beautiful red wine produced with respect for nature and the wine (and wine lovers). Vina Sastre's philosophy is clear: “Create a small production with utmost care.” The cultivation of the vineyards has been ecological since the beginning, based on the idea that the quality of the soil and the individuality of each vine are reflected in the wine. The entire process is natural – no mineral fertilizers are used, nor any inorganic pesticides or chemicals.
The grapes of Sastre Crianza come from specific vineyards along the Duero River, located at an altitude of 800m. The sticks are between 20 and 60 years old. The grapes are harvested manually, which allows for a very careful selection. Upon arrival in the cellar, they are destemmed and gently pressed, after which the juice and peels undergo alcoholic fermentation and further maturation. After removing the skins, the wine continues to rest until it undergoes lactic acid fermentation. Finally, the wine matures for 14 months in French and American oak barrels (225l).
In the glass the wine is intense cherry red with a hint of violet. On the nose, the Sastre Crianza has a complex nose with aromas of black fruit, followed by tobacco, vanilla and spices. On the palate, this medium to full bodied wine is very pleasant and somewhat creamy with a smooth attack characterized by black fruit, followed by powerful, balanced tannins. Complex full wine with a lot of potential.

From: Ribera del Duero: A Shifting Frontier for Spanish Wine (Nov 2023)
The 2020 Crianza is 100% Tempranillo from a vineyard planted in 1960 in La Horra and was aged for up to a year in barrels. A murky garnet-red in the glass. The ripe nose offers aromas of blackberry and dried plum accompanied by subtle notes of vanilla and mocha. Indulgent and rich with firm tannins, the taut, compact mouthfeel delivers plenty of lasting dark fruit flavor.

Jesú Sastre is a vineyard enthusiast, and where he would like to spend his days. Sastre is so passionate about vines that he developed a method to transform them from bush to trellis-trained just to avoid ripping them up. When we went to his fields, it felt more like visiting individual plants than vineyards. This dedication is the beating heart of the winery, which began as a family business and is now owned and managed by Jesú Sastre himself. As a part of his commitment to grape care, Sastre uses minimal sulfur and only a touch of wood, except for Pesus, in which oak plays a prominent role. Overall, the winery aims to maintain a degree of lightness even in ripeness, showcasing polished tannins.

In the middle of the Ribera del Duero, Rafael Sastre fulfilled his dream and that of the whole family: his own winery! Viña Sastre was founded in 1992 after decades of wine-growing experience, including at the Virgen de la Asuncion cooperative. Grandfather Severiano Sastre, father Rafael Sastre and the two sons Pedro and Jesus all devote themselves, without exception, heart and soul to the family business. The expanding success is the result of extremely precise and diligent work. The wines are not only produced with blood, sweat and tears, but also strictly bio-dynamically. The commitment to the highest quality is unparalleled and this is reflected in the consistently high level of quality. The most famous wines of the house, 'Pago de Santa Cruz', 'Pesus' and 'Regina Vides' are extracted from special plots of vineyards planted 60 years ago.
The vineyards for this wine stretch along the banks of the Duero, in the immediate vicinity of La Horra, at an altitude of 800 meters. The vines for the 100% pure Tempranillo are between 65 and 75 years old. At Sastre, only biodynamic viticulture is practiced, which is why the fertilizers, plant protection products, etc. were completely abandoned. A 34-month upbringing in new wooden barrels of American and French oak benefited the wine.
