Description
100 year old vineyard raised on 100% new French oak. This is the highest standard in the Ribera del Duero. Unfiltered and organic/organic of the highest standard. Although this is an expensive wine, Parker gives it a price indication of $235.
In the middle of the Ribera del Duero, Rafael Sastre has fulfilled his dream and that of the entire family: his own winery! After decades of experience in wine growing, including at the Virgen de la Asuncion cooperative, Viña Sastre was founded in 1992. Grandfather Severiano Sastre, father Rafael Sastre and the two sons Pedro and Jesus all, without any exception, devote themselves with heart and soul to the family business. The expanding success is the result of extremely precise and diligent work. The wines are not only produced with blood, sweat and tears, but also strictly biodynamically. The commitment to the highest quality is unparalleled and this is reflected in the consistently high level of quality. The house's best-known wines, Pago de Santa Cruz, Pesus and Regina Vides, are extracted from special plots of the vineyards, which were planted 60 years ago.
The vineyards for this wine extend along the banks of the Duero, in the immediate vicinity of La Horra, at an altitude of 800 meters. The grape vines for the 100% pure Tempranillo are between 80-90 years old. At Sastre, only biodynamic viticulture is practiced, which is why fertilizers, plant protection products, etc. were completely dispensed with. A long aging in new wooden barrels made of French oak was beneficial to the wine.

This time I found more finesse and balance in the 2015 Regina Vides than in their top bottling Pesus. It's still very young and was only bottled in July 2017, after some 18 months in new French oak barrels. I especially noticed the roasted and toasty, smoky aromas from the wood, but those should get better integrated with some more time in bottle. It's a heady and powerful red, but it's better balanced than the other wines from the year, which delivered very powerful and warm wines with high alcohol levels. This is a more classical profile than Pesus; there is more nuance, depth and elegance and, ultimately, what I find more important: balance. 6,000 bottles produced.

Slightly refreshing on the nose thanks to the spicy yet minty lift from the oak. Blueberries, blackberries and some dark chocolate, too. Juicy and a tad chewy on the full-bodied palate followed by some tart cherries and blue fruit in the medium-long finish. 100% tempranillo. Better from 2024.

The 2020 Regina Vides is a single-vineyard wine from Las Tenadas in La Horra, Ribera del Duero and was aged for 18 months in barrels. A dark purple in hue. The ripe aromas feature sour cherry, blackberry and a subtle layer of cedar. Dry with finely-grained tannins, the nimble feel on the palate is thanks to the gentle freshness and depth. This is a long-lasting, carefully crafted Ribera wine.

Jesú Sastre is a vineyard enthusiast, and where he would like to spend his days. Sastre is so passionate about vines that he developed a method to transform them from bush to trellis-trained just to avoid ripping them up. When we went to his fields, it felt more like visiting individual plants than vineyards. This dedication is the beating heart of the winery, which began as a family business and is now owned and managed by Jesú Sastre himself. As a part of his commitment to grape care, Sastre uses minimal sulfur and only a touch of wood, except for Pesus, in which oak plays a prominent role. Overall, the winery aims to maintain a degree of lightness even in ripeness, showcasing polished tannins.
