Bodegas Emilio Moro and the family history

Bodegas Emilio Moro is one of the most recognizable names in Ribera del Duero. The family-owned winery has been working for generations in Pesquera de Duero, the heart of the region. Here, the Moro family began cultivating Tempranillo on the slopes surrounding the village, long before Ribera del Duero became an official appellation. In 1989, the first wine bearing the Emilio Moro name was released, a red that quickly became the house's flagship.

Today, the estate has become one of the most modern and high-quality establishments in Ribera del Duero. The focus is on its own vineyards, pure Tempranillo, and a style that combines power, freshness, and elegance. The pursuit of precision in both vineyard and cellar is the foundation of their success.

The terroir of Pesquera de Duero

The grapes for Emilio Moro 2023 come from Pesquera de Duero, an area where the combination of clay, limestone, and river deposits creates concentration, depth, and a subtle minerality. The vineyards' southwestern exposure helps the grapes ripen optimally, while the altitude and climate ensure freshness.

Pesquera de Duero is renowned for its powerful yet elegant Tempranillo. The middle-aged vineyards, which play a key role in this wine, yield ripe and pure fruit without excess. In 2023, this resulted in a wine with both structure and tension.

The 2023 vintage in Ribera del Duero

The 2023 vintage began with abundant rain during the winter months, which significantly replenished soil reserves. Spring and early summer were unusually dry and warm, resulting in vigorous growth. Just before harvest, further rain showers brought more balance to the grapes, preserving both concentration and freshness.

The result is a precise, open, and balanced Tempranillo with ripe fruit, soft tannins, and a lively structure. The winery itself considers 2023 a vintage of great aromatic purity and a remarkably harmonious style.

Tempranillo in its classic Ribera style

Emilio Moro 2023 is made entirely from Tempranillo. This grape produces wines in Pesquera de Duero with notes of ripe cherries, blackcurrants, plums, and subtle spices. Tempranillo from this region is known for its natural structure, but in 2023, that structure is remarkably smooth and rounded.

The grapes come from middle-aged vines, which ensures sufficient concentration without excessive power. This keeps the wine elegant and approachable, with clearly defined aromas and a fresh core.

Vinification and maturation

Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic purity. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation, also in stainless steel. Maturation took place in a combination of French and American oak barrels. This produces subtle hints of cocoa, vanilla, and spice without overpowering the fruit.

The choice of this combination of barriques gives the wine both softness and depth. The wood supports the structure but remains in the background, preserving the freshness and clarity of the Tempranillo.

Color, smell and taste of Emilio Moro 2023

The color is intense cherry red with purple highlights. The aroma reveals black and red fruits, complemented by light cocoa, vanilla, and a touch of spice. The nose is rich yet elegant and continues to blossom with swirling.

The palate is round and soft with a fruit-driven character. Ripe cherry, plum, and blackcurrant notes are supported by a delicate spicy nuance. The tannins are ripe and polished, making the wine smooth to drink yet with depth. The finish is long, fresh, and harmonious, with a subtle minerality.

Maturation potential

While Emilio Moro 2023 is already delightfully approachable, the wine can deepen further over the next five to seven years. In bottle, the spices, cocoa, and oak notes will integrate more fully, and the fruit will develop a softer, riper structure.

The family business Emilio Moro has been located in Pesquera del Duero since 1892. This bodega boasts a three-generation tradition and includes vineyards over 90 years old. Due to their long history, they have been able to expand their vineyards very specifically with mostly Tinto Fino. The Finca Resalso and Crianza excel in purity, elegance and complexity. The top cuvées are of rare class; the very old vines of these two 'Pagos' give an extremely low yield resulting in very complex wines with a great depth and temperament.

In 1987 Emilio Moro first launched his own wines under his own label. With about 200 hectares of vineyards and a total annual production of 1.5 million bottles, it is a modern and large company. Thanks to its high quality standards and innovative management, it is also one of the leading wine companies. This applies not only in Spain but money worldwide and this is also confirmed that it has been nominated by Wine Enthusiast as Best Winery of the World. Emilio Moro's focus on Research, Development and Innovation is impressive and the enormous focus on quality is certainly an important factor in the high quality of all wines, but let's not forget that the old Emilio Moro vineyards are located in the most beautiful part of the Ribera del Duero with a completely unique and extremely suitable terroir located at a great height. In 2017, Wine Spectator placed the Emilio Moro in 59th place in the Prestigious Top 100 of the world's best wines.

In 2008, Emilio Moro died at the age of 75. In the same year, the Emilio Moro foundation was established, which is committed to providing poor regions of the world with clean drinking water and improving living conditions. Javier & José Moro are now in charge.

The emilio moro portfolio consists of 5 red wines, all of which are made from the regional variant of the Tempranillo (tinto fino). The special thing is that a very old pure clone is used. The vineyards range from 30-90 years old, but even the younger vineyards are from the lots of this unique clone. Emilio moro does not use the terms Crianza or Reserva and the name of the wine stands for the character of the wine.
