the history of Château Tronquoy

Château Tronquoy-Lalande is one of the oldest wine estates in Saint-Estèphe, dating back to 1791. The estate is known for its independence: François Tronquoy decided not to participate in the famous 1855 classification. Since 2006, the estate has been owned by brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who also own Château Montrose. Thanks to investments in the vineyard and cellar, as well as a shared winemaking team with Montrose, the quality of Château Tronquoy has soared. Today, the estate is recognized as a serious producer with its own distinctive style and a strong position within the appellation.

the terroir of saint-estèphe

Château Tronquoy's vineyards are situated on a single, contiguous 30-hectare block, directly bordering the Gironde estuary. This unique terroir is part of the famous "Terrace No. 03," the most complete terrace in Saint-Estèphe, with an exceptional depth of 10 meters. The combination of gravel and clay ensures excellent drainage and water retention, allowing the vines to remain perfectly balanced even in hot summers. The nearby estuary acts as a natural temperature regulator, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and develop aromatic complexity.

sustainable and innovative winegrowing

Château Tronquoy pays close attention to biodiversity and a natural balance in the vineyard. The estate has been officially certified organic since 2024. In addition, over 800 meters of hedgerows have been planted, one hundred birdhouses and bat boxes have been installed, and six beehives have been introduced into the vineyard. This approach strengthens biodiversity and contributes to healthy soil and vigorous vines, which is ultimately reflected in the wines themselves: pure, expressive, and with a clear signature of the terroir.

the grapes and harvest of the 2020 vintage

The 2020 growing season was challenging, with a wet winter, a warm spring, and a dry, hot summer. Thanks to the deep clay soils and the terroir's reserves, the vines retained their vitality. Harvest took place between September 11th and 28th. The Château Tronquoy 2020 blend consists of 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. This combination gives the wine both the roundness and fruit intensity of Merlot and the structure, freshness, and aging potential of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by the spicy depth of Petit Verdot.

vinification and maturation

After hand-harvesting, the grapes were carefully selected to incorporate only the finest fruit into the wine. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with an emphasis on preserving fruit and finesse. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, some new, to add complexity and structure without overpowering the fruit aromas. The result is a wine with an impressive balance of power and elegance, which is very accessible even when young, yet also has excellent aging potential.

tasting notes of Château Tronquoy 2020

This vintage was not sold during the primeur campaign and is therefore only now being released for the first time (late 2025). Distribution is handled by a very small number of négociants, making it quite unique for the Netherlands. Château Tronquoy 2020 presents itself with a deep, intense red color. The nose reveals enticing aromas of candied black fruit, cassis, blackberries, and blueberries, complemented by toasted notes reminiscent of chocolate and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is generous and enveloping, with a rich structure and a harmonious balance between ripe fruit and crisp acidity. The finish is long, energetic, and lingers elegantly. The combination of concentration and freshness makes this wine an excellent representative of the 2020 vintage from Saint-Estèphe.

Jeb Dunnuck also awarded the wine 95 points, praising its intensity and persistent finish. Le Figaro and Terre de Vins both awarded it 94 points. These unanimously high scores confirm the 2020 Château Tronquoy's status as a top wine from the appellation.
