the history of Château Tronquoy
Château Tronquoy-Lalande is located in Saint-Estèphe, in the heart of the Médoc. The estate has a long history dating back to the 18th century and is closely linked to Bordeaux tradition. In the 21st century, the château was given a new lease of life under the leadership of the same owners and winemakers of Château Montrose. This led to investments in the vineyard and cellar, significantly raising the quality of both the red and white wines. Today, Château Tronquoy is one of the few estates in Saint-Estèphe that produces white wine in addition to red, making this wine particularly special.
the saint-estèphe region and the terroir
Saint-Estèphe is one of the northernmost appellations of the Médoc and is known for its robust and structured red wines. However, the terroir also offers excellent potential for white wine. The vineyards of Château Tronquoy benefit from a clayey subsoil with deep water reserves, allowing the vines to withstand extreme drought even in hot summers. The temperate maritime climate and proximity to the Gironde estuary provide coolness and stability, essential for the freshness and aromatic complexity of the white grapes.
white wines from Château Tronquoy
Although Château Tronquoy is primarily known for its red wines, in recent years the house has also focused on producing high-quality white Bordeaux. Tronquoy Blanc is a blend that showcases the unique expression of the Médoc in white: rich, refined, and with excellent aging potential. Production is small-scale, making this wine a rarity and highly sought-after by connoisseurs and sommeliers.
harvest and vinification of the 2020 Tronquoy Blanc
The year 2020 was characterized by variable weather conditions, with a mild, wet winter, a sunny spring, and a dry, warm summer with several heat waves. The grapes benefited from the water reserves in the clay soil, which improved the balance of the fruit. The harvest took place between August 19th and 31st. Three selections were made for the Sémillon and two for the Sauvignon gris, to ensure optimal ripeness.
The wine is composed of 55% Sémillon and 45% Sauvignon gris. During the aging process, bâtonnage took place three times a week in the first few months to develop additional complexity and depth. This resulted in a wine with a rich aromatic profile and a soft, rounded texture.
tasting notes of the 2020 Château Tronquoy Blanc
This vintage was not sold during the primeur campaign and is therefore only now being released for the first time (late 2025). Distribution is handled by a very small number of négociants, making it quite unique for the Netherlands. The 2020 Tronquoy Blanc presents itself with a pale yellow color and thick tears in the glass. On the nose, it displays impressive freshness and complexity, with aromas of white flowers, citrus, and a hint of quince. The subtle use of oak provides only a subtle hint of vanilla, without dominating. On the palate, the wine is supple, juicy, and elegant, with a lively freshness and a remarkable length on the finish. The balance of fruit, freshness, and soft roundness makes this wine exceptionally versatile at the table.
