Description
Origin: Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc
Style: Red – powerful, structured, elegant and ripe
The 2022 vintage of Château Tronquoy marks a new chapter for this historic domaine in Saint-Estèphe, which has been in the same family as Château Montrose since 2006. Tronquoy stands out with a unique terroir of gravel and clay, which is perfectly suited to both Merlot and the classic Médoc grapes. Tronquoy-Lalande will be called TRONQUOY from the 2022 vintage - a new look and a serious improvement in quality. TRONQUOY is one of the best value for money wines from the 2022 vintage. Wine critics such as Parker, Vinous and Suckling give this wine a high rating. You can read the wine reviews via the links next to the image. A free service for our customers.
The wine has a deep ruby red colour. The nose reveals a layered aromatic complexity with notes of black cherry, ripe cassis, graphite, violets and subtle woody notes of cedar and dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is rich and full, with a core of ripe black fruit, finely integrated acidity and a firm but silky tannin structure. The finish is long and precise, with a fresh, slightly spicy lift.
The 2022 Tronquoy shows an impressive balance between power and elegance. Despite the warm year, the wine retains refinement and freshness, thanks to careful vinification and controlled extraction. It is a wine that gives a lot of pleasure in its youth, but will also evolve excellently in the cellar.
Wine and food pairings
This rich and structured Bordeaux pairs perfectly with dishes with concentration, juiciness and savoury depth. Here are some thoughtful combinations:
Grilled or roasted beef
Dishes such as entrecote with rosemary, tenderloin with red wine sauce or ribeye from the grill find a powerful but refined companion in this wine. The tannins give structure to the meat and the fruity character matches the jus or reduction.
Lamb with Provencal herbs or garlic
A classic pairing: leg or rack of lamb with rosemary, thyme and garlic reflects the spicy and earthy notes of the wine, while the juicy meat tames the tannins.
Game dishes and autumn stews
Deer, wild boar or duck with blackcurrants or spices perfectly complement the ripe fruit, spicy complexity and mouth-filling character of the wine.
Dishes with mushrooms or truffles
Risotto with chanterelles, pasta with truffle or roasted mushrooms bring out the earthy character in the wine and create a harmonious combination with its structure and elegance.
Medium-matured cheeses with a salty or nutty undertone
Think old Comté, Tomme de Savoie or Cantal. These cheeses offer enough fat and flavour to accompany the tannins without overshadowing the aromatic profile of the wine.

The 2022 Tronquoy has turned out much better than I anticipated, bursting with aromas of dark berries, cassis, cigar box and nicely integrated new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and elegantly muscular palate that's dense and penetrating. This is well worth seeking out.

Lots of blackberries, lead pencil, dark earth and blackcurrants. Bright and clear. Full-bodied with lots of fruit yet framed and structured with a deep and intense finish. It goes on for a long time. Greatest Tronquoy ever. A blend of 59% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 6% petit verdot. Needs five to six years to open.

From: A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Tronquoy contains more Cabernet Sauvignon this year due to the low-yielding Merlot, resulting in an impressive Saint-Estèphe. It was an impressive Saint-Estèphe out of barrel. Now, it has a very intense bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis, wilted violets and a slight honeyed aroma. This is well defined, miles away from the Tronquoy I tasted a decade ago. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced, with powdery tannins and a thread of salinity that gives it an estuarine personality. There's real character to this wine, though I suggest giving it three to five years in bottle before broaching. Excellent.
