Description
The special climate of Elgin allows Paul Cluver to make wines with a special acid balance and an almost European style. The reference for Chardonnay wines from South Africa is Paul Cluver. The Seven Flags Chardonnay is the first release from 27-year-old vines, some of the oldest in South Africa. The vines are clones of Burgundy vines from Dijon. The 7 Flags from Paul Cluver has a bright, mineral-driven bouquet with a hint of sea salt and limestone. The palate is very well balanced and very Burgundy-like, more Chassagne than Meursault with a very long, slightly spicy finish with the 30% new oak deftly integrated. 2014 was the debut of this beautiful wine and has been very highly rated every year This wine has a great drinking window of 2025-2033+ Fish, poultry, pork and game dishes go beautifully with this wine. It goes particularly well with creamy pasta and salmon dishes. The good acidity and balance between wood and fruit keeps the wine from being too rich and therefore also great without food.

Gleaming with vintage variance, the 2022 Seven Flags Chardonnay is complex with layers of yellow apple, white peach and sweet citrus essences. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh and complex and offers bright, elegant acidity before uncoiling across a long, lingering finish that brings me back for more. Bravo!

From: South Africa: Where Are We Now? (Sep 2024)
Despite rigorous swirling, the 2023 Chardonnay Seven Flags seems a little "contained" on the nose. I actually find as much, if not more, tension on the Chardonnay Estate. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded texture and forward peach and nectarine notes. This is a plump Chardonnay that just misses the control and focus of the 2022. Nevertheless, it is a delicious Chardonnay, just one without the complexity of Clüver's best vintages.

Paul Cluver is located in Elgin, one of the coolest regions of South Africa. Paul Clüver is originally an apple company, but since 1986, on the initiative of owner Paul Clüver, also a wine company. Due to its location in a very cool area, directly by the sea, wines are made here with a remarkable finesse and freshness. Third generation starts with wine. The estate of the Clüver family, De Rust, was acquired in 1896 by the grandfather of the current owner, Paul Clüver.
Soil samples were taken during the 1980s, which showed that viticulture was perfectly possible here. It was then decided to replace part of the apple orchards with vineyards. It was initially agreed to process the grapes into wine on the Nederburg Estate, one of the
most famous houses of the Cape. The first grapes were planted in 1986: Sauvigon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Weisser Riesling. The latter grape has been planted to make sweet wines with the help of noble rot. The estate's wines are now entirely made in-house to give them their own character. Andries Burger, the winemaker of Paul Clüver, is responsible. Dr. Paul Clüver himself is still involved in his own profession: neurosurgery.
