Description
The Wetshof Sur Lie Chardonnay comes from vineyards situated on gravel and limestone soils, similar to those found in France. Ideal for fine Chardonnay. The Wetshof Chardonnay is a bright straw yellow in the glass, with a lovely open aroma and pleasant citrus notes. It's wonderfully pure, apple-like, and broad. On the palate, this superb Chardonnay is full of finesse and fresh acidity, minerally and crisp, apple-like, and has a lovely length. Daniel de Wet prefers to age this wine on its own must (sur lie) rather than in oak, allowing the wine to achieve maximum freshness and complexity through the sur lie. This Chardonnay offers an unparalleled price-quality ratio.
De Wetshof Estate is located in the Robertson wine region, approximately 160 kilometers from Cape Town. Johann de Wet, the father of Danie, the current owner of De Wethof Estate, laid the foundation for the estate as it is today in 1952. For Danie, becoming a winemaker wasn't initially a given. He actually wanted to be a veterinarian. However, his father persuaded him to pursue winemaking, seeing it as the farm's future. He convinced his son by promising him the opportunity to study in Geisenheim, Germany, to broaden his horizons in Europe. Upon his return in 1972, De Wetshof became the first private winery in Robertson, separate from the local cooperative. Danie saw numerous possibilities and planted noble varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay. Over the years, this led to De Wetshof becoming the most renowned Chardonnay producer in South Africa. Under the leadership of Danie de Wet, De Wetshof has grown into one of South Africa's leading wineries. It covers an impressive 200 hectares, planted with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.

The Wetshof Estate in the Robertson Region - 160 km from Cape Town - is South Africa's best known Chardonnay home, and makes a wide range of wine styles from this versatile grape variety. The winery has a balanced portfolio of special and highly distinguished wines from vineyards and cellars where the latest technologies and traditional no-nonsense wine and winemaking techniques go hand in hand.
De Wetshof is located in the Robertson Valley between the Riviersonderend and Langeberg mountains, where the Breede River flows to the southern coast of the Cape. Today, Robertson has developed into one of South Africa's most successful wine regions. The rich loamy soil near the Breede river and the lime deposits on hill and mountain slopes further inland make the region suitable for a high quality and wide variety of grape varieties. Robertson is less than a hundred miles from the ocean. The climate with warm, sunny days and cool nights, is ideal for wine growing.
De Wetshof has a state-of-the-art cellar that is computer-controlled and uses gravity techniques. There is also a spectacular cellar that houses the best oak barrels, where the beautiful wines can mature.
Danie de Wet experiments a lot with new techniques to further improve the quality of the grapes. He is participating in a weather station project and is investigating the water evaporation in the soil of the vineyards and from the vine leaves of the vines. De Wetshof specializes in making Chardonnay. Danie's beautiful creations have inspiring names such as Bon Vallon, Lesca and d'Honneur
