Borgogno, an icon of Piedmont

Borgogno is one of Piedmont's oldest wineries, established in 1761. Located in the village of Barolo, it's considered a true institution in the Italian wine world. The estate owns 31 hectares of vineyards, a large portion of which is planted with Nebbiolo, but grapes like Barbera also receive ample attention. Borgogno is known for its classic and traditional methods and boasts an impressive library of vintages, even dating back to the 1960s. This underscores the enormous aging potential of its wines. The winery operates entirely organically and holds the Slow Wine certification, guaranteeing fair and sustainable production.

the terroir of langhe bompé

Bompé's vineyards are located on the hills of Alba, in the heart of the Langhe region. Their mountaintop location ensures optimal sunshine from morning to late afternoon. The soil, partly composed of white rock formations, imparts a mineral note to the wine. The microclimate, with warm days and cooler nights, promotes slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in Barbera of great aromatic complexity and freshness.

grapes and harvest

The Borgogno Langhe Bompé 2022 is made from 100% Barbera grapes. This grape is known for its crisp acidity, vibrant fruit aromas, and culinary appeal. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand to ensure the highest quality. Thanks to organic methods and careful selection of the bunches, only the finest fruit reaches the cellar.

vinification and maturation

After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation in cement tanks. Fermentation lasts approximately ten days and takes place at controlled temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. This is followed by 12 months of aging in toasted French oak barrels. This aging gives the wine structure and complexity, without losing the vibrant character of the Barbera.

tasting note borgogno langhe bompé 2022

The wine has a ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose reveals aromas of red berries, forest fruits, and roses, subtly complemented by a hint of black pepper. On the palate, the wine reveals a concentration of ripe red fruit and a nuance of smoky notes, combined with a mineral freshness derived from the exceptional soil. The tannins are refined and, together with the long finish, provide a balanced and elegant experience.

wine and food pairings

The Borgogno Langhe Bompé 2022 is versatile at the table and can accompany a wide range of dishes:

  • Pappardelle with wild boar ragĂą, where the freshness of Barbera balances the rich sauce.
  • Grilled entrecote with rosemary and garlic, beautifully complemented by the spiciness of the wine.
  • Risotto with porcini and Parmesan cheese, where the earthy notes and the acids form a harmonious whole.
  • Grilled aubergine with tomato and burrata, a refined combination of creaminess and freshness.
  • Tuna steak with a sesame crust, surprisingly complemented by the fruity intensity of the wine.
  • Braised lamb shoulder with Mediterranean herbs, where the structure of the wine adds strength and elegance.

Borgogno is one of the very first and probably very oldest wineries in Piemonte. The Italian winery strongly believes in the classical and traditional philosophy whatever its strength; adherence to these traditions has been passed on to future generations for years. Borgogno owns 13 hectares of vineyards, 9 of which are planted with the Nebbiolo grape. The wines are all vinified in a traditional way to produce unique and structured wines.
