The Barolo DOCG Sarz is a red wine, produced with Nebbiolo grapes from the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) area of Barolo. The perfect exposure of the vineyard, together with the specific characteristics of climate and soil, lead to an extremely elegant and long-lived wine. The vineyard is located at 310 meters above sea level with ideal southern exposure. The vineyard is located on soil consisting of fossil marl from S. Agata - gray-blue marl (more or less sandy) with local sand accumulations and very calcareous. The vineyard was planted in 1982.

The Nebbiolo is a late ripening grape variety and the grapes for this great Barolo are harvested in the first half of October. Once in the winery the grapes are destemmed and crushed and then placed in stainless steel thermo-conditioned tanks where the alcoholic fermentation takes place. The alcoholic fermentation lasts for a good 10 days at a temperature of 28-30 ° C. The wine then remains in contact with its lees for at least another two months while the lactic acid fermentation completes. The wine is now ready and must now mature in peace. This is done in oak barriques where approximately 60% is in new oak and 40% in 1-year-old oak barrels for 36 months. Montaribaldi's vision is that oak refines the wine as long as it is not excessive. The Barolo Sàrz is then bottled but then remains in the cellars of Montaribaldi for at least another 6 months. Montaribaldi is a specialist in terroir wines, not a chemistry factory, because good wine must come from a good vineyard and a vintage must reflect the terroir, is Luciano's opinion and we fully support this.

In the glass this Barolo Sàrz has the typical garnet red color with orange reflections. In the nose beautiful tones of wood, leather, ripe fruit and spices. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with fresh acids, refined beautiful present tannins that are not bitter, but very well integrated. We advise to carafe the wine or open it at least 2 hours in advance. The great success of this winery comes from tradition and innovation and because of this they are able to produce beautiful wines of a very high quality every year. The wine perfect with roasted meat, savory cheese and of course dishes with truffle. This is a wine with a great aging potential.

1. Wild mushroom risotto with aged Parmesan

The umami of mushrooms supports the earthy character of the wine, while the Parmesan accentuates the ripe fruit and spicy notes. The creamy texture of the risotto contrasts nicely with the present acids and tannins.

2. Braised beef shank with sage, carrot and red wine jus

The deep flavors of braised beef bring out the complexity of the Barolo. The savory sauce softens the tannins and emphasizes the ripe red fruit in the wine.

3. Ravioli filled with pigeon and truffle in butter sauce

An elegant and luxurious combination. The intensity of the poultry and the earthy character of the truffle perfectly match the floral, spicy and mineral aromas of Nebbiolo.

4. Grilled entrecote with rosemary and parsnip puree

The fat and texture of the meat balance the tannins, while the spiciness of rosemary and the sweetness of parsnip enhance the aromatic depth of the wine.

5. Polenta with lamb sausage, fennel and roasted peppers

The full flavour of the lamb and the roasted vegetables go well with the Barolo's structure. The spicy elements in the dish subtly bring out the floral and spicy character of the wine.

6. Beetroot tartare with balsamic vinegar, hazelnut and soft goat cheese

A vegetarian dish with earthy and nutty notes that complement the Barolo flavor profile. The acidity in the wine enhances the fresh character of the beetroot and balsamic, while the soft cheese and hazelnut provide balance and depth.

BAROLO VS BARBERESCO

Piedmont - synonymous with truffles, risotto and, of course, delicious wines! - is considered one of Italy's premier wine regions. The local conditions of terrain, soil and weather produce some fantastic wines. As for the reds, the Barolos and Barbarescos are world-famous, powerful, ageing wines. Despite Barolo and Barbaresco being made from the same grape, Nebbiolo, and produced in neighbouring regions within 10 miles of each other, the wines of Barbaresco and Barolo have some distinctive differences.

The Barbaresco area is located south of the Tanaro river and due to its location the area has a slightly higher average temperature which allows the Nebbiolo grape to ripen slightly earlier than in the Barolo area. Young tannins in a young Barbaresco are often not as hard as Barolo and under DOCG rules it is permitted to release Barbaresco for sale a year earlier than Barolo. The most pronounced difference between the two wines is that the tannins of Barbaresco tend to soften more quickly making the wine more approachable at a younger age than Barolo. The Barbaresco area is smaller than the Barolo area with an annual production of around 35% of Barolo production which means that Barbaresco is not as widely available on the market.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is historically a family business, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The Montaribaldi winery has been owned by the Taliano family from the beginning and has 19 hectares in the Barberesco area. In 1994 Luciano and Roberto took over the company from their father and immediately decided to only produce high quality wines. It is still a real family business, father Guiseppe and mother Carla as well as the wives of the owners, Antonella and Franca all cooperate. At present they produce about 75000 bottles a year. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langhe, the elegant wines that come from them have a long life. Note that the land around the Montaribaldi vineyards is from Gaja. The family makes some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes typical of this region. Typical of this winery is that the wines have their origin in Piedmont, are always recognizable as a 'Montaribaldi' wine and are sustainably grown and produced. As they call it themselves: making 'vineyard wines' distinguishes them from others.
