A Barbera as it should be. Not like the many everyday Barberas that are mass-produced and for which far too much money has to be paid, but a carefully made Barbera full of black fruit, wood, cocoa and a hint of vanilla. Simply TOP. The Barbera d'Alba DOC Du Gir comes from Barebera vineyards located in the municipality of Alba at an altitude of 225 meters and the vineyards are already more than 60 years old. The Barbera grapes must be harvested between the end of September and the first decade of October. The vineyard Du Gir is the last Barbera vineyard to be harvested. The stems are removed from the grapes after which the grapes are pressed. The soaking takes about ten days at a temperature of 30 to 32 ° C. The wine is matured in new oak wine barrels for 18 months (225 liter barrique). After a very light filtering, the wine is finally bottled almost 2 years after the harvest, but then the Barbera d'Alba DOC Du Gir remains in the cellars of Montaribaldi for at least 6 months and only then is it ready to be marketed.

The Dü Gir vineyard is a very old vineyard that as Luciano says 'has seen it all' and produces very consistent top grapes year after year. The Dü Gir is without a doubt one of the finest Barberas available and is a wine that can age fantastically. 10 years or more is no problem.

In the glass the wine is ruby red with a black-violet reflection. Very fruity, especially black forest fruits and plum jam come to the fore and are complemented by a mix of cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa and tobacco. Full and round, with appropriate fresh acids. This wine tastes delicious with pasta dishes, game (venison, deer), veal and pork, roasted or not, and with old cheeses.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is a family business by history, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The grapes of Montaribaldi grow between the vineyards of Angelo Gaja's famous winery. Not the least to have as neighbors. The owners of the Montaribaldi winery, the brothers Luciano and Roberto Taliano consider themselves lucky with their plots of land, which are spread out in the Langhe and Monferrato hills. Wine has been made here for centuries and even Unesco appreciates the interplay between man and nature by recently including this region in the prestigious World Heritage List. Although the Montaribaldi winery has existed for much longer, the brothers have not been active in wine terms for that long, since 1994. But together with winemaker Carlo Arnulfo they are already making beautiful Piemonte wines with a great price/quality ratio.

The family produces some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes that are typical for this region. Typical for this winery is that the wines have their origin in Piedmont, are always recognizable as a 'Montaribaldi' wine and are grown and produced sustainably. As they call it themselves: making 'vineyard wines' distinguishes them from others. No chemistry box but a healthy vineyard makes the typical Montaribaldi Terroir wines.

The Barbera grape is known for its high acidity and used to be the wine of the people because of its large harvest and wide applicability. Times have changed and Barbera wines have made a big leap in quality. This Barbera from Montaribaldi comes from older vines from the vineyard called Dü Gir. By maturing the wine in new wooden barrique barrels for a year, a beautiful balance is created between the typical fresh Barbera acidity and round tannins of the oak. The Talianos then let the bottles rest for another eight months in their cellar before this wine is sold. You can taste the love for making wine and this quality makes the Barbera Dü Gir unbeatable, especially for this price.

1. Roasted chicken with thyme, lemon and roasted garlic

The fresh acidity of the Barbera enlivens the juicy meat and cuts through the fat beautifully. The spicy notes in the wine enhance the aroma of the thyme and roasted garlic.

2. Tagliatelle with aubergine, tomato and basil

The hearty flavour of grilled aubergine and the acidity of tomato find a natural balance in the fresh, fruity style of the wine. The spicy touch of basil matches the peppery edge of the Barbera.

3. Pizza with prosciutto, arugula and Parmesan

A combination of salty ham, spicy green and savoury cheese is nicely rounded off by the cherry fruit and the fresh acidity. The creamy structure of the cheese is enlivened by the wine.

4. Veal meatballs in tomato sauce with rosemary

The juicy texture of the meat and the sour sauce are a classic combination with Barbera. The rosemary emphasizes the spicy background in the wine.

5. Risotto with roasted beetroot, goat cheese and walnuts

The earthy sweetness of beetroot, the creaminess of goat cheese and the nuttiness of walnut create a playful and layered combination that pairs well with the red fruit and acidity in the wine.

6. Ravioli filled with duck ragout and orange peel in sage-butter sauce

The rich and spicy duck filling is beautifully carried by the structure of the Barbera, while the citrus accents harmonise nicely with the freshness and fruity intensity of the wine.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is historically a family business, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The Montaribaldi winery has been owned by the Taliano family from the beginning and has 19 hectares in the Barberesco area. In 1994 Luciano and Roberto took over the company from their father and immediately decided to only produce high quality wines. It is still a real family business, father Guiseppe and mother Carla as well as the wives of the owners, Antonella and Franca all cooperate. At present they produce about 75000 bottles a year. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langhe, the elegant wines that come from them have a long life. Note that the land around the Montaribaldi vineyards is from Gaja. The family makes some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes typical of this region. Typical of this winery is that the wines have their origin in Piedmont, are always recognizable as a 'Montaribaldi' wine and are sustainably grown and produced.
