Description
The 2017 Remírez de Ganuza Olagar Gran Reserva Blanco is a rare and prestigious white wine from Rioja, made by one of the most renowned producers in the region. It is the top white cuvée of Remirez de Ganuza. From a small vineyard at 600m altitude in Samaniego. Only vieilles vignes Viura. Only 3000 bottles of this wine are produced and the demand far exceeds the need. The wine is already being released with much praise and the press writes of a 'game changer' and Tim Atkins has chosen the 2017 as the best white Rioja
“From a 1.45-hectare parcel that escaped the devastating frost of 2017, Olagar is a high-altitude Viura that ranks among Spain’s finest white wines. Effortlessly handling its new French oak maturation, the wine has a chalky intensity, subtle matchstick notes, beeswax, citrus zest and mandarin flavours, hints of fennel and salted almonds, and a lingering finish.” Drink: 2026–2035 — Tim Atkin MW
The 2017 Remirez de Ganuza Olagar Gran Reserva Blanco is the fifth vintage of Remírez de Ganuza Blanco Gran Reserva Olagar. The wine is made with grapes from a very special vineyard, Olagar. It is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in a border area for the harvest, at an altitude of 600 meters. It was planted in 1978 with local grape varieties in the traditional bushvine system. With an area of 1.45 hectares, it has a perfect orientation, with a pronounced calcareous clay slope and shallow soils that help contain the vigour of the vines. Through the manual harvest, the bunches are transported in 12 kg boxes to thermo-controlled cold rooms and kept for 24 hours before fermenting at 4ºC - 6ºC. The grapes are then selected manually on a sorting table. The wine is made by extracting the flower must with a rotor deposit, without crushing the grapes. The wine is fermented and matured with its lees in new French oak barrels for 10 months. The yeasts are stirred by turning the barrels manually, a system unique to the winery that replaces the traditional bâtonnage.
The Remirez de Ganuza Olagar Gran Reserva Blanco is fresh with a slightly oxidative character with bitter notes, mineral, white fruit. Fantastic aromas of a great white Rioja: both in the nose and mouth reminiscences of great white Burgundy. Spicy and floral notes alternate with white stone fruit, exotic fruits and an elegant wood note that will blend perfectly in the future. Broad in the mouth with a lot of content and firmness. Round mouthfeel, serious length and complexity.
WINE-FOOD SUGGESTIONS:
Grilled langoustines with garlic and parsley
The saltiness and delicate sweetness of the shellfish blend seamlessly with the rich structure and ripe fruit of the wine. The garlic and parsley enhance the spicy notes and keep the whole in balance.
Cod with creamy leek sauce
The soft texture of the cod and the creaminess of the sauce complement the full structure of the wine. The fresh acids in the Olagar cut through the fat nicely and provide balance.
Pollo al ajillo (chicken with garlic and white wine)
A classic Spanish dish with lots of umami. The roasted and garlicky elements in the dish match beautifully with the aging aromas in the wine. The wine is powerful enough to match the heartiness of the dish.
Risotto with truffle and Parmesan cheese
The creamy texture of the risotto and the umami of the Parmesan and truffle enhance the roundness and depth of the wine. The wine offers sufficient acidity and power to carry the whole elegantly.
Roasted Cauliflower with Tahini and Lemon
A surprising vegetarian option. The nutty flavour of tahini and roasted cauliflower go well with the roasted notes of the wine. Lemon gives the whole a freshness that goes well with the acidity of the wine.

98 Points Tim Atkin: Sourced from a 1.45-hectare parcel that escaped the devastating frost of 2017, Olagar is a high-altitude Viura that is among the best whites in Spain. Drink: 2026–2035 — Tim Atkin MW

Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.
The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.
At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
