Another great wine, this white SJ Anteportalatina from quality winery Bodegas Pujanza . A beautiful representation of the unique terroir, medium intense with a freshness of floral aromas, white fruit, citrus notes and a touch of minerality on the nose. Taste: accessible and fresh entrance, rich mouthfeel in which the tipicity of the soil comes to the fore. A wine rich in nuances and complex aromas enhanced by the lees. This delicious white wine is excellently balanced and has a very long, lingering aftertaste. It is young but approachable, with good balance and enough weight and potential to age well. The Anteportalatina is made in the good (normal) years and in the cool (good) years the Anada Frias is produced. In the poorer years, no white wine is made by Pujanza. Unique in its kind and very nice as an aperitif and also delicious with more refined dishes, fish, lobster. This 2020 is the successor to the 2018 vintage. In the glass the wine is light yellow and clear. The SJ Anteportalatina is a wine that transmits the terroir through the nose. With medium intensity it is fresh, with floral aromas, citrus notes, white flesh and a touch of minerality. The phenolic aromas that develop in the bottle stand out here, something very rare in the region of origin. Full, direct attack, with a creamy, fresh mouthfeel, which shows the typical characteristics of the vineyard from which it comes. This is a wine rich in nuances, good body and complex aromas thanks to the work with the lees. Very long, persistent aftertaste. Similar in style to the Tondonia (Reserva) Blanco and, as with that wine, there is always only a handful available.

The San Juan de Anteportalatina estate is located in Laguardia, south of Bodegas Pujanza. Initially this vineyard was planted with Tempranillo, but Carlos San Pedro's father later decided that the higher part, the "cabezada", was more suitable for the cultivation of the Viura grape variety due to the properties of the soil. Since the 2006 vintage wine is produced from the grapes from this vineyard, initially only the Añadas Frías. This wine was made every year, but was only actually marketed in the years 2007, 2013 and 2013. Only the winery's staff and friends enjoyed the wine made in the remaining years. Since they thought the quality of the wine was so good and it was getting better over the years, the winery decided in 2015 that there was no other option than to bring this wine to the market, which also resulted in a new brand, the SJ Anteportalatina . The 2020 vintage is the 4th vintage of this great wine and is made from one of the earliest harvests in Rioja and is characterized by very good climatic conditions throughout the entire growing cycle and an exceptionally beautiful September month which contributed to the ultimately great quality of the grape. This gives this SJ Anteportalatina its own style, a unique character and a great personality. After careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes undergo cold maceration for several hours. Soft pressing after which alcoholic fermentation starts in stainless steel barrels. After three days, fermentation takes place in French oak barrels of 225 and 500 liters. Aging took place in the same barrels for 14 months.

Bodegas Pujanza is located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The winery is located in one of the most beautiful villas in this region. A real prime location in the most beautiful part of the Rioja. Bodegas Pujanza is one of the youngest (top) Rioja houses and started in June 2002. It is a family business with a long tradition of growing grapes and wine making in the capital of the Rioja Alavesa. The location in the valley of the Ebro and the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, partly determines the character of the Pujanza wines.

Owner Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards and with an almost manic approach, they try to improve the quality of the wines even further. Pujanza is one of the new style winemakers in the Rioja such as Remirez de Ganuza and Tentenublo where the focus is on absolute top quality with emphasis on the fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker without exception rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honor division) says enough. The 4 main wines are the Hado, the Valdepoleo (in the past this wine was called the Pujanza Pujanza) the Norte and the cult wine the Cisma.

Carlos is one of the pioneers together with Remirez de Ganuza in the field of modern style Rioja's and has the luxury that his vineyards are situated high so that there are good differences between day and night temperature. This gives the wines extra complexity and freshness. Carlos only works with single vineyards except at the Hado (here the grapes are used from the norte and Valdepoleo vineyards). Carlos has divided all 3 vineyards into plots (except the Cisma vineyard because it is so small) and all these plots are vinified separately. Only just before bottling, the various plots are combined until it has the desired taste and then it is bottled. This concept is far from economical but does make for great wines. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he deliberately chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to raise the wines longer in large (used) barriques.
