Description
Another top-notch white wine, this SJ Anteportalatina from the quality winery Bodegas Pujanza . A beautiful representation of the unique terroir, medium intensity with a nose of freshness, floral aromas, white fruit, citrus notes, and a hint of minerality. Palate: accessible and fresh on the palate, rich in the mouthfeel, revealing the typical characteristics of the soil. A wine rich in nuances and complex aromas, enhanced by the lees. This delicious white wine is superbly balanced and has a very long, lingering finish. It is young yet approachable, with good balance, sufficient weight, and potential for aging well. The Anteportalatina is produced in good (normal) years, and the Anada Frias is produced in cool (good) years. Pujanza does not produce a white wine in lesser years. Unique in its kind, it is wonderful as an aperitif and also delicious with more refined dishes, such as fish and lobster. This 2020 vintage is the successor to the 2018 vintage. In the glass, the wine is pale yellow and clear. The SJ Anteportalatina is a wine that reveals the terroir through the nose. With medium intensity, it is fresh, with floral aromas, citrus notes, white flesh, and a hint of minerality. The phenolic aromas that develop in the bottle are particularly striking, something very rare in the region of origin. A full, direct attack, with a smooth, fresh mouthfeel, reveals the typical characteristics of the vineyard from which it originates. This is a wine rich in nuances, with good body and complex aromas thanks to the work with the lees. A very long, persistent finish. Similar in style to the Tondonia (Reserva) Blanco, and as with that wine, only a handful are available.
In Laguardia, south of Bodegas Pujanza, lies the San Juan de Anteportalatina estate. Initially, this vineyard was planted with Tempranillo, but Carlos San Pedro's father later decided that the higher part, the "cabezada," was more suitable for growing the Viura grape variety due to the soil's properties. Since the 2006 vintage, wine has been produced from the grapes from this vineyard; initially, only the Añadas Frías. This wine was produced annually, but only in 2007, 2013, and 2014 was actually released. Only the staff and friends of the winery enjoyed the wines produced in the other years. Because they found the quality of this wine so good, and it continued to improve over the years, the winery felt compelled in 2015 to release this wine as well, which also resulted in a new brand, the SJ Anteportalatina. The 2020 vintage is the fourth of this magnificent wine, made from one of the earliest harvests in Rioja. It is characterized by excellent climatic conditions throughout the entire growing cycle and an exceptionally beautiful September, which contributed to the grape's ultimate superb quality. This gives this SJ Anteportalatina its own unique style, character, and personality. After careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes undergo a cold maceration for several hours. They are gently pressed, after which alcoholic fermentation begins in stainless steel vats. After three days, fermentation follows in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels. Aging took place in the same barrels for 14 months.

The white 2020 Anteportalatina is a village white from Laguardia produced with Viura at 600 meters in altitude. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French barriques and concrete egg for one year. It has 14.02% alcohol and a pH of 3.05 with 6.8 grams of acidity. I love the nose here; I find the restraint of cooler years. And the palate is powerful with great freshness. The wine is tasty and showcases the profile of Viura, a bit neutral and austere but with a lot of freshness and great aging potential. I liked this better than the 2019 Añadas Frías. 2,030 bottles.
Pujanza is one of the leading names in modern Rioja. It was created by Carlos San Pedro in Laguardia where he owns 40 hectares of vineyards and produces some 200,000 bottles. I tasted mostly 2019s, a very warm and ripe year with very high ripeness and all the wines (except the Hado) are above 15% alcohol, because he saw green notes in the grapes and waited for the ripening of the grapes but the alcohol was quite high. But the wines are not overripe; it's a ripe but compensated year. 2020 is cooler and the wines are fresher and have more contained alcohol, but both years are low yielding, for different reasons, but both with moderate crops.

A quick introduction to Bodegas Pujanza: a relatively young Rioja estate that quickly made its mark with characterful wines.
History and background of Bodegas Pujanza
Carlos San Pedro, the fourth generation of a winemaking family in Laguardia, released his first wine under the Pujanza name in 1998. He started with 15 hectares of vineyards and has since grown to almost 40 hectares. All of it lies in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, at altitude, where cool nights shape the fruit. In just two decades the estate has become a key player in the region.
Location and terroir of Bodegas Pujanza
All vineyards are located within about 4 km of the winery, around the medieval town of Laguardia. The position in the Ebro valley, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria, creates a unique microclimate: warm days, cool nights, and limestone-rich soils. This brings slow ripening, aromatic depth, and a fresh line of acidity.
Grape varieties: Tempranillo and Viura
The estate works only with two native grapes: Tempranillo for the reds and Viura for the whites. Everything comes from their own vineyards, with close attention to each plot.
Specialities: single-vineyard wines and more
- Hado: entry-level Tempranillo from different parcels, bright fruit, aged 12 months in French oak.
- Finca Valdepoleo: the original 17.5 ha vineyard at about 630 m altitude, later lending its name to this cuvée.
- Norte: one of the highest plots (around 720 m), on limestone soils, powerful yet fresh with striking structure.
- La Paul: a newer addition, a small vineyard with its own microclimate at about 600 m, fermented spontaneously, partly in concrete and partly in oak. Elegant and balanced.
- Cisma: a rare bottling from a century-old parcel (La Valcabada), produced in tiny quantities, distinctive in style.
- Añadas Frías: white Viura from the San Juan plot (about 600 m), made only in cooler vintages such as 2007, 2010, and 2013.
Interesting facts about Bodegas Pujanza
- Carlos divides each vineyard - except for Cisma - into smaller subplots and vinifies them separately. They are only blended just before bottling to reach the desired balance.
- No cultured yeasts are used, and new oak is limited. Ageing takes place mainly in seasoned barrels for longer periods.
- Critics such as Parker and Peñín consistently award the wines over 90 points.
