Description
The Sierra Cantabria Reserva has a very good price-quality ratio. The Sierra Cantabria is a 100% tempranillo of 30+ year old vineyards located on calcareous clay with gravel. Environmentally integrated agricultural cultivation, with respect for the environment, according to the biorhythm of the plant. The average yield is low and is around: 35 Hltr/Ha. The hand-harvested bunches are selected in the vineyard and in the winery through a double sorting table. The harvest date: October 22 to 28, 2013.
The grapes are completely destemmed. Temperature-controlled fermentation between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius with native yeast selected from our own vineyards. Extended post-fermentative maceration on the skins for 11 days, with pumping over twice a day at the beginning and a light pumping over daily at the end. The wine then spends 17-18 months in Bordelaise barrels of (70%) French and (30%) American oak.
The Sierra Cantabria Reserva shows poise and balance coming from the wonderful year 2014. The wine is medium bodied with spicy, smoky and creamy flavors and good acidity. A firm and silky red with beautiful brightness. Dark berries, hints of cedar and tobacco. In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful Rioja Reserva.

2015 was a warm and powerful year with tannins, and the 2015 Reserva shows ripeness and jammy fruit, with plenty of spice and a powerful, full-bodied palate. It has 14.2% alcohol and a pH of 3.55. They used a little new oak here, 20%, and they used mostly French (70%) but also 30% American oak barrels, where the wine matured for 17 months. They like this style of San Vicente, powerful and ripe fruit, concentrated and expressive. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. It's aging quite slowly.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. Winemaking is aimed at minimal intervention in the winery to fully respect the character of the terroir
