Description
The unprecedentedly beautiful winery Paolo Scavino has launched 2 new vintage 2015 wines, and this is one of them. This promising Barolo Prapò comes from the vineyard of the same name in the village of Serralunga d'Alba. The soil in Serralunga d'Alba is the oldest in the Barolo region and belongs to the Formazioni di Lequio that originated 11-12 million years ago during the Serravallian period. The yellowish and reddish sand is combined with layers of silky, grayish marl. When the winery bought the plot it was surrounded by other vineyards and it remained uncharted for many years. They worked the land with care and passion and then allowed the plot to rest for almost 2 years before it was planted again in the spring of 2010.
Enrico, the father of Lorenzo and Paolo, has dedicated the grafting of rootstocks of the best vines from the Scavino vineyards (the less powerful, with looser bunches and smaller berries) and thus new vines were created. Thanks to their genetics, they will be able to express the qualities and personality of the vineyard itself much better. The vineyard is situated on a hill with a south-southeastern expoxure with an accented slope that is a maximum of 370 m high. Although the vineyard is sunny all day (especially in the morning), it is never sultry because of the height and the open hill.
The grapes for this Barolo were harvested by hand in the second part of October and then stalked and gently crushed. Maceration and alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature with the naturally occurring yeasts. Malolactic conversion into 225 L barrels during the winter follows. Aging: 10 months in neutral French oak barrels and then 12 months in large barrels. Finally 10 months in stainless steel followed by 10 months bottle aging.
The Prapò is therefore a new wine from winery Scavino that already has many Barolo of exceptional quality to its name, so that promises something. Although Barolo from Serralunga has always been described as fairly austere, we find many elements of softness and elegance in the Prapò. It is a deep wine, characterized by an intense garnet red color, dark fruit such as figs and black cherries, and spicy notes such as nutmeg and black pepper. The texture is dense, rich and charming with full tannins.
Our advice: leave this wine alone for a few years and then enjoy this wonderful barolo even more.
The wine goes well with red meat (grilled / roasted), lamb, and game dishes.

This is also a new wine, coming from less than a hectare in the Prapò vineyards, from which only five producers draw their fruit. It's a beautiful plot at about 1,000 feet in altitude and with a full southern exposure, producing some very meaty fruit with a high phenolic presence, as the color is darker and there is more perfume. The 2015 Barolo Prapò is a distinctive vintage of a wine that is one to watch, for sure. The vineyard makes the difference, with brown and orange sandy soils, along with marlstone and veins of soils more typical of the area. The Scavino family bought this plot in 2008 and let the land rest for two years before they replanted. The goal, they said, was to steer away from more productive clones in favor of those that wouldn't take away too much from the quality. They took wood from the mothership vineyards in Bricco Ambrogio for this experiment, grafting them onto the rootstocks they carefully selected. The result is a soft and delicate Barolo with a lot of personality to go along with its firmness and power. This is an easy cru to recognize. Enrico Scavino said they could have waited longer for this experimental harvest, but they felt the time was right, explaining that "this work is all about feelings and instincts."
The unfortunate news from the Paolo Scavino family is they lost access to their vineyard site in Cannubi. For that reason, both the Barolo Cannubi and the Barolo Carobric will soon be discontinued.

Paolo Scavino winery is a historic winery in the Italian region of Barolo. It was founded in Castiglione Falletto in 1921 by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Agriculture has always been a family tradition and passion of the Scavino family.
Now Enrico Scavino runs the family domain together with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, the 4th generation. He already worked in the winery in 1951 when he was only 10 years old. A young winemaker who has inherited the passion and dedication of his country. Through more than 60 years of experience, his focus has been on investing in Nebbiolo's major cru to demonstrate the uniqueness of each terroir. The working method of this beautiful winery is inspired by the love and respect they have for their terroirs. Their pursuit of purity of expression, complexity and elegance for their wines is also a great source of inspiration. The winery works with the 3 local grapes Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo.
