Fernando and Jose Urtan have saved a few hundred bottles of the 2009 Remirez de Genuza Reserva, which have been given an extra long bottle of maturation and importers such as Grandcruwijnen in the Netherlands have been able to purchase a number of cases of this wine from the fantastic 2009 year. . The Drinks Business has placed this wine in the top 10 of the best wines in the world. Another milestone they already had with the 2004 Remirez Gran Reserva with the 100/100 points from Parker. In the Drinks Business review they write:

"For a longtime I've been fan of great Reserva Rioja, and years of blind-tasting wines from this part of Spain has only strengthened my devotion for this somewhat unfashionable region, and style – that is, among fine wine lovers and collectors. But if you need to convert the discerning drinker who's wedded to cru classé reds from France, then Remírez de Ganuza is the producer to do it, and especially when it comes to their remarkable Reservas.

Here's my tasting note from The Rioja Masters 2022:

The best Reserva of 2022's Rioja Masters, Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza is the one to beat. Now more than 10 years old, this outstanding wine is drinking beautifully now, with plenty of mature characters, from leather and sweet balsamic, along with stewed fruit, and even a note of berry compote. Complementing these flavors is a touch of cedar, dark chocolate and spice, as well as a lovely texture, that starts fleshy and finishes chewy and fresh. A great Rioja, and a fine wine that's ready to drink"

The Remirez de Ganuza Reserva is the flagship of this famous, modern, innovative top winery from Rioja. The Reserva spent 28 months in the barrel before being bottled. The Reserva is produced from 85% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano and 5% Viura & Malvasia from vineyards that are over 60 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand in 12-kilo boxes, which are cooled for 24 hours in cold rooms to 4-6 º C, after which only "los hombros" or the shoulders (the upper part of the grape bunch) are used for its wine , because these are the ripest grapes that have seen the most sun. The harvested grapes are then fermented in French oak barrels after which the wine is transferred to new oak barrels (90% French and 10% American) for malolactic and aging for no less than 26 months in the impressive cellars.

The Remirez de Ganuza Reserva is deep red in color. The wine has a very complex bouquet with fine fruit tones, terroir impressions, southern sun, fine roasty touch and leather accent. Strong attack, meaty, mouth-filling wine with depth, after some airing more dimensions become available. Contemporary Rioja that is not tempted by over-extraction but reflects its grandeur in a complete structure with length. Finely crafted, elegant TOP Rioja with a great wine that only shows its real self after about 8 years.

Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.

The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.

At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
