De El Nido van de gelijknamige bodega behoort tot de top 25 beste wijnen van Spanje. Topwijn van domein van Juan Gill. Van de El Nido worden gemiddeld slechts 5000 flessen gemaakt dus dit is schaars, uniek en onvergelijkbaar. Absolute topper gevinifieerd door grootmeester Chris Ringland (bij Parker goed voor 100/100).
De El Nido werd geproduceerd met een blend van 70% Cabernet Sauvignon en 30% Monastrell gefermenteerd in roestvrij staal met neutrale gisten en 23 maanden gerijpt in een combinatie van Franse en Amerikaanse eikenhouten vaten; het is een rijp, krachtig en bedwelmend mediterraan rood met royaal eikenhout geproduceerd in een zeer specifieke stijl. Dit is bedwelmend en rijp, super krachtig met concentratie en slagkracht, maar in balans. Net als bij de Clio is de integratie van de eik in 1 woord geweldig. Dit heeft alle ingrediënten en balans om mooi en langdurig op fles te ontwikkelen. Het moet een van de beste jaargangen voor El Nido zijn. The 2022 El Nido was produced with a blend of 70% Monastrell from 32 hectares of vines with an average age of 76 years of age and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from 12 hectares planted in 1986. It fermented in small stainless steel tanks with neutral yeasts and matured in new French and American oak barrels for 23 months. It's spicy and smoky, with creaminess, ripe berry fruit and a full-bodied palate with abundant, slightly grainy tannins. It has 15% alcohol, a pH of 3.62 and six grams of acidity with three grams of residual sugar. 4,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.
El Nido is the joint venture between the Gil and Australian winemaker Chris Ringland. The style is ripe and generous in oak, but somehow I found less oak in the wines (and more in Bruto) this year. They produce 70,000 bottles.

The 2017 El Nido was produced with a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 23 months. This regularly hits the scale at 16% alcohol; it's a ripe, powerful and heady Mediterranean red with generous oak produced in a very specific style that will not please everyone. This is heady and ripe, super powerful with concentration and clout, but in balance. As with the Clio, I feel the integration of the oak is better than ever. Don't get me wrong, this is still generously oaked and ripe. I often describe this as an XXL red but with balance. This has all the ingredients and balance to develop nicely and for a long time in bottle. It has to be one of the finest vintages for El Nido, more Mediterranean than the 2016. 5,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2019.

I also tasted the 2019 El Nido, produced with a similar blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell as the 2018 I tasted next to it. This wine always ferments in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matures in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 23 months. 2019 was marked by torrential rains during the harvest (200+ liters in Jumilla) and the crop was reduced by 30%. It's a little lower in alcohol at 15.5%. Even if younger and a little creamier, I feel there is better integration of the oak (or the toasted notes from the charred wood) in this 2019 than in the 2018. It's fresher and has better balance in the XXL style of red that doesn't come through as varietal; the grapes feel very integrated, and the varietal character seems diluted in the blend. 5,500 bottles were filled in September 2021.
Bodegas El Nido is a project from the Gil Vera Family from Jumilla together with Australian winemaker Chris Ringland; it was born in 2002. The wines, Clio and El Nido, come from the grapes of the oldest vineyards that the Gil family owns around the winery. In the 2009 vintage, a 100% Syrah called Corteo was first produced. They have 46 hectares of vineyards and produce 70,000 bottles. Both 2018 and 2019 were very challenging vintages in the zone and they had to discard up to 30% of the grapes. 2019, perhaps more challenging because of the torrential rains in September, comes through as a little fresher and more balanced. They expect better 2020s... The vineyards are organically farmed, and the wines will be certified starting with the 2022 vintage.

A stylish red, with the savory underpinning of tarry smoke and cured tobacco serving as a fine counterpoint to ripe black currant, fig cake and licorice twist flavors. Gains power and weight from the concentrated flavors and sinewy tannins, but this is deftly knit and fresh. Harmonious today, but should also show well with short-term cellaring. Pretty spice and violet notes play on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell. Drink now through 2034. 450 cases made, 280 cases imported.

From: Mediterranean Spain: Where to Start? (Mar 2021)
Saturated violet. An expansive, spice-accented bouquet evokes cassis, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and potpourri; vanilla and woodsmoke nuances emerge with air. Juicy and deeply concentrated, offering palate-staining, appealingly sweet black and blue fruit preserve, violet pastille, licorice and mocha flavors that become livelier as the wine opens up. The floral and mineral notes reverberate emphatically on an extremely long, spicy finish that features mounting tannins and a hint of bitter chocolate.

The goal for this project of the Gil Family (Bodegas Juan Gil), was to explore just how high Jumilla’s quality could be pushed. It has been a big success. The two wines produced here, Clio and El Nido, are considered by many to be among Spain’s finest red wines, regardless of their origin. Famed Australian winemaker Chris Ringland consults. Readers familiar with Ringland’s work will see his imprint on these lush, lavishly fruity and concentrated wines that can also age effortlessly. The estate comprises almost 77 hectares of mostly old-vine Monastrell yielding a fairly large quantity of wine.

Miguel Gil, eveneens eigenaar van het topdomein Juan Gil, koos uit respect en liefde voor zijn regio (en grote wijn!) voor kwaliteit in plaats van kwantiteit in het voor jaren onontdekte Jumila. Voor het miniproject van Bodegas El Nido doet hij beroep op de Australische topwijnmaker Chris Ringland (bij Parker goed voor 100/100…) Op deze kleine Bodega worden 2 wijnen gemaakt: Clio & El Nido. De 16 ha Monastrell wijngaarden van 60 jaar oud prijken op terrassen die noordoost georiënteerd zijn. Verder werden er 25 jaar geleden in dezelfde regio 12 ha Cabernet Sauvignon op de heuvels met oriëntatie noord aangeplant. Vandaag bieden deze unieke wijngaarden druiven van topkwaliteit die door het duo Gil-Ringland magnifiek veredeld worden tot Spanje’s meest aristocratische wijnen.
De gehele internationale wijnpers is unaniem in zijn oordeel over de El Nido en de Clio wijnen. Ongekend goed en behoren tot de top van de Spaanse wijnen. Absoluut gezien zijn de El Nido en de Clio niet voordelig maar relatief gezien (bijv in vergelijk tot top-bordeaux) kosten de Clio en Nido een fractie en hebben dus een ongekend goede prijs/kwaliteit. In een prachtige selectie wijnen mogen de El Nido en Clio volgens onze bescheiden mening van Miquel en Juan Gil niet ontbreken.

De Juan Gil Family Estates vertegenwoordigt een groep kleine wijnhuizen verspreid over heel Spanje: van Jumilla tot RÃas Baixas, van de heuvels van Montsant tot Calatayud, van de vlaktes van Almansa tot de gevierde koninkrijken Rueda en Castilla y León. Allen vallen ze onder één paraplu van de Juan Gil Family Estates.
