Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso enjoys a perfect location with its vineyards situated on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary, the Rio dos Patos, or the River of the Ducks. Consequently, the ducks on the labels are its trademark. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes, a luxury few vineyards enjoy. This partly explains why this winery can produce very fine wines, as there is never a water shortage. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo influenced by the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening.

The Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Branco is made from 100% Antão Vaz grapes. For this wine, the winery pays very close attention to the exact moment of ripeness of the grapes. And when this moment arrives, the grapes are hand-picked, then destemmed and lightly crushed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 25 days, after which the wine is allowed to further mature in oak barrels for 6 months "Sur Lie" and undergoes a period of bottle aging.

The Sobro Branco Reserva Branco (Barrique Select) has a clear color in the glass with a very light green/yellow tinge. On the nose, fresh notes of flowers and tropical fruits. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, somewhat spicy, and very layered, with the complexity of the Antão Vaz giving the wine extra freshness and intensity. This wine reflects the terroir of Alentejo. This is a true terroir wine and is a fine gastronomic glass to accompany refined fish such as sea bream, tuna, or grilled turbot. It is also a magnificent wine that pairs perfectly with creamy sauces accompanying rich fish dishes and mature cheeses.

Certified wine expert and culinary journalist Anne-Wies van Oosten recommends this wine with a bouillabaisse featuring red snapper, cod, sea bass, shelled mussels, prawns, and raw squid rings.

WINE AND FOOD SUGGESTIONS

  • Grilled sea bream with lemon and olive oil
The wine's fresh acidity and subtle woody notes pair perfectly with the delicate flavor of sea bream and the citrus accent of lemon.

  • Salad with goat cheese, pear and walnuts
The creamy goat cheese and the sweetness of the pear are beautifully balanced by the fresh and slightly spicy notes of the wine, while walnuts provide extra bite.

  • Risotto with green asparagus and Parmesan cheese
The creaminess of the risotto and the fresh character of the asparagus pair well with the rich texture and lively acidity of the wine.

  • Fried cod with a white wine and caper sauce
The full body of the wine holds its own against the firm texture of the cod, while the fresh acidity beautifully freshens up the sauce.

  • Roasted chicken breast with lemon and thyme
The spicy and fresh profile of the wine pairs seamlessly with the juicy chicken and the Mediterranean herbs.

R

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.

Herdade do Sobroso history & location

Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.

The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.

Which grape varieties grow here?

Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.

Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso

One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.

A few fun facts

  • The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
  • There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
  • The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.

Herdade do Sobroso as an experience

Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
