Description
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary Rio dos Patos or the river of the ducks. The trademark is therefore the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes and only a few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very fine wines because there is never a water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo with the influence of the ocean that ensures healthy ripening.
The Grande Reserva is the pride of Herdade do Sobroso and is a blend of Alicante Boushet & Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The Sobroso Grande Reserva is a true terroir wine with a focus on the maximum expression of the unique terroir of Herdade do Sobroso next to the banks of the Guadiana River, where the vineyards are located.
The best grapes have been carefully selected and after a gentle fermentation fermented in stainless steel open air vats with controlled temperature after which the wine is allowed to mature for at least 18 months in new French oak barrels and then follows a bottle maturation of at least 6 months before the wine becomes available. Of these wines only between 6000-7000 bottles are ever made and this is only released in the top years. The bottles are numbered.
In the glass, the Grande Reserva has a dark, fresh, red color and shows the wine as it is: powerful and refined. The wine has red fruit such as cherry and currant, but also dark fruit such as ripe blackberries. We also smell and taste leather, espresso, vanilla and pencil shavings. In the mouth, the wine is full bodied, fresh with firm yet soft tannins and the aftertaste is long and very elegant. This is a real enjoyment wine and a gastronomic all-rounder, so the Grande Reserva is an excellent companion for traditional Portuguese meat dishes or with mature cheeses, but also delicious with a beautifully matured Rib Eye.

The strength and structure of the Grande Reserva complements the full character of grilled red meat. The rosemary and garlic add extra layers of flavor that harmonize with the wood aging of the wine.
Wild boar stew with juniper berries and mushrooms
The robust character of game, combined with earthy mushrooms and spicy juniper berries, provides a perfect complement to the concentrated, spicy notes in the wine.
Lasagna with aubergine, grilled pepper and old cheese
This vegetable-rich casserole gains depth from the addition of old cheese, which plays nicely with the ripe fruit tones and the fresh acids of the wine.
Ossobuco with gremolata and risotto alla Milanese
The braised veal shank delivers soft, gelatinous textures and deep flavours, while the citrusy gremolata provides contrast. The wine stands on its own with its structure and intensity.
Beef cheek with truffle puree and roasted parsnip
Slow-cooked meat with creamy mashed potatoes and the earthy note of truffle perfectly matches the deep complexity and use of wood in this wine.
Duck breast with balsamic vinegar and cherry compote
The combination of juicy meat, sweet and sour fruit and a light caramelization in the sauce beautifully brings out the ripe fruit and soft tannins in the wine.

The 2016 Tinto Grande Reserva is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet aged for 18 months in new 500-liter French barrels. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Lush but fairly powerful, this has both intensity of flavor and tannins. The tannins aren't too astringent, though, which makes this at least theoretically possible to drink now. That would be a bad idea, though, as this could really use a couple of years in the cellar to integrate its parts and smooth out. It has at least some mid-palate finesse—it is never overly jammy. It is focused and finishes with grip and flavor. This is nicely done, and it may yet improve. It's a fine value too.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.
Herdade do Sobroso as an experience
Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
