Description
Château Cheval Blanc 2024 – class and precision from a difficult year
The Château Cheval Blanc 2024 shows how great craftsmanship and exceptional terroir can create a masterpiece even under challenging conditions. This Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A is the result of rigorous selection, technical excellence and an uncompromising vision. Despite the abundant rainfall, the 2024 vintage is a vintage of freshness, balance and texture , with an impressive elegance reminiscent of the legendary 2004.
A year of challenges
The 2024 harvest was marked by exceptional rainfall – from the autumn of 2023 until deep into the growing season. Mildew and irregular flowering caused heterogeneous ripening and a complex harvest process. Fortunately, the deep clay soils and the Cabernet Franc proved their worth: they held their own where gravel soils struggled.
The harvest took place from 18 September to 3 October , largely in wet conditions. More than a third of the harvest was rejected or used for second wine and saignée. Nevertheless, the team’s careful selection produced an exceptional Grand Vin, with only 28 hl/ha of vinification yield – a rare low volume for this icon.
Assemblage and vinification of the Cheval Blanc
The final blend is powerful and refined:
48% Cabernet Franc – elegance, tension, floral finesse,
46% Merlot – structure, ripe berries, roundness,
6% Cabernet Sauvignon – grip, length, dark depth.
The wine was fermented and aged by plot, with a careful selection of only the best lots. The low yield and high proportion of Cabernet Franc give this vintage a very distinctive signature.
2024 Cheval Blanc Tasting Notes
Cheval Blanc 2024 shows itself on the nose with aromas of blackcurrant, violets, fresh herbs and graphite , underpinned by fine wood tones. On the palate it is silky, medium-bodied but full of tension, with a noticeable energy and freshness . The tannins are fine-grained and contribute to a long, complex finish. A wine that rewards patience and comes into its own after a few years of maturation.
Availability and wine-food advice
This wine goes perfectly with refined dishes such as truffle risotto, roasted game, pigeon with figs or veal in morel sauce.

A blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 48% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Château Cheval Blanc is one of the stars of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of minty berries and plums mingled with violets, cigar wrapper and rose petals, it's medium-bodied, suave and complete, with a cool, layered core of fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and a long, aromatic finish. Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team conducted an aggressive green harvest and also, exceptionally, used densimetric sorting to mitigate heterogenous maturity between and within bunches (a consequence of a protracted flowering), accepting losses to rot in pursuit of full maturity. Yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare at harvest, but some 34% of that was eliminated between sorting and press wine (which is never retained at Cheval Blanc). Of what fermented, however, 70% ended up in the grand vin.

Château Cheval Blanc St.-Emilion 2024
So succulent and long on the compacted palate, this shows just enough clean ripe berries as well as cedar and chocolate. This has polished, energizing tannins with a lovely and thoughtful drive, the light austerity giving the wine a push in the finish. Only 12.8% alcohol. A blend of 46% merlot, 48% cabernet franc and 6% cabernet sauvignon.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Cheval Blanc was picked from September 18 until October 3 and aged entirely in new oak with a little dabbling in concrete tanks and amphorae. The purity on the nose is the first facet that you notice with perfumed black cherry, blackcurrant, wild strawberry and touches of potpourri and crushed stone. There is certainly some mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly brittle tannins. Very well balanced, this is clearly a Cheval Blanc built in a more elegant, sapid, linear style with a residual pepperiness that lingers in the mouth. It will need just 2 or 3 years in bottle and should drink well for 20 to 25 years. The 2024 is charming and refined.

Pierre-Olivier Clouet is one of those people who always present a candid viewpoint of the vintage. He is not prone to airbrushing out the difficulties or shortcomings of the growing season at an estate that I believe translates the vagaries of the season more than many others.
“The mildew pressure was huge, but we have the ability to deal with it,” he told me in a busy vat room. “What was novel was just how early it was. There was already some mildew during the primeur tastings. The key was to understand that flowering took place over six weeks, whereas a good one would be 12 to 15 days. This resulted in heterogeneity within bunches, so we did some green harvesting. At the beginning of flowering, we let the earlier-ripening bunches rot in order to eventually have the maximum amount of grapes achieve ripeness. It’s a year where it was impossible to be overripe. Secondly, at the end of flowering. We discarded 34% of the crop, so we picked at 39 hl/ha and vinified at 28 hl/ha, with the bain densimètrique reducing the crop. Every evening, we took 300 berries from each parcel to the lab, where we had six batches with different levels of potential alcohol. When we had the sensation that a particular batch had the right level of ripeness, then it would be taken out of the cold room and the fruit would go through the bain densimètrique Even though we don’t like the idea of densimetric, or saignée, or chaptalisation, we did all three because we sought a good percentage of Grand Vin [it is 70% of the average volume in 2024]. We had to increase the Merlot by half a degree, but we didn’t do it for the Cabernet. There are 37 plots in the Grand Vin, eight for Petit Cheval, and three we sold off in bulk.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Cheval Blanc is a blend taken from 37 of the 45 parcels on the property. Dried flowers, mocha, rose petal and blood orange open nicely in the bouquet, leading to an understated mid-palate and a subtly persistent finish. Understated and nuanced, the 2024 offers lovely forward fruit in a soft, accessible style with no hard edges or awkward contours. All the elements are nicely put together, and yet there is no denying the fact that the 2024 is very light. Élevage will be everything here.
