Description
Weingut Stift Göttweig is known as one of the oldest wineries in Austria. As a Benedictine abbey, Stift Göttweig was founded in the year 1083 by Altmann of Passau (also called Saint Altmann). Since then, the abbey has always played an important role in the development of wine production in the Wachau Valley. Stift Göttweig is located in the rolling countryside on the southern bank of the Danube opposite the city of Krems at 449 meters above sea level. Because of this location and the abbey, the winery is also called the Austrian Montecassino. The Benedictines were responsible for the administration and management until 1988, after which the property was rented out until 2005. Since 2006, winegrower Fritz Miesbauer and his team have been reliving history on the Stift Göttweig estate.
The vineyard where the grapes grow for the Stift Göttweig Riesling Furth is located near the village of Furth bei Göttweig. The vineyards around this village are favoured by the atmospheric currents that come from the Dunkelsteiner forest. The combination of this air current and the natural humidity in the Danube region provide balanced conditions that allow the grapes to grow optimally. The soil consists mainly of loess, clay and primary rock. The microclimate and the typical soil composition are therefore the ideal basis for the Riesling that grows here. Once the grapes have been harvested and pressed, the must is vinified after which the wine is allowed to age for another 4 months in stainless steel tanks, which preserves the typical freshness.
The dry and fruity Stift Göttweig Riesling Furth gives in the nose ripe wild peaches and citrus fruits. Spicy and refreshing in the mouth with tones of apricot, peach, lemon zest followed by a mineral undertone that ends in a pleasant balanced aftertaste. Perfect combination with oriental cuisine, smoked chicken and fried fish.
