Description
history of Domaine Michel Niellon and Clos de la Truffière
Domaine Michel Niellon has been established in Chassagne-Montrachet for generations. The winery is known for its pure, mineral-driven wines with clear terroir expression. The cuvée Les Chaumées 'Clos de la Truffière' comes from a historic walled plot and is considered one of the estate's flagship wines.
location and terroir of Les Chaumées 1er Cru
Les Chaumées is a premier cru located in the higher, cooler northern part of the appellation. Clos de la Truffière is a monopoly within this cru, owned by Domaine Niellon. The soil consists of limestone, fine marl, and gravel, which provides exceptional minerality and freshness. The southwest exposure guarantees slow, even ripening of the grapes.
vinification and maturation of the 2023 Clos de la Truffière
The grapes for this 100% Chardonnay are harvested by hand. After a gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which are new. The wine then matures for 12 months on the fine lees with light bâtonnage, which provides texture, aromatic complexity, and a subtle balance between oak influence and terroir character.
the 2023 wine year and style
2023 was an excellent year with healthy flowering, a warm summer, and a timely harvest. The grapes reached optimal ripeness while retaining their acidity. This resulted in a wine with ripe white fruit, vibrant freshness, and a precise, energetic structure – typical of this cru.
color, smell and taste of the wine
In the glass, the wine displays a bright, golden yellow color with a faint green hue. The nose opens with white flowers, ripe citrus, apricot, and subtle notes of almond and wet stone. On the palate, the wine combines a silky texture with energetic acidity, fine minerality, and an impressively layered finish. The balance between power and precision is characteristic of this Clos de la Truffière.
storage potential and serving tips
The 2023 Clos de la Truffière is already tempting, but will continue to develop over the next 8 to 10 years. Serve the wine at 10–12°C. Light aeration in the glass will help the wine fully open and reveal its aromatic depth.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière mingles aromas of orange rind and pear with hints of fresh bread, buttered pastry, toasted nuts and dried white flowers in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, bright and ample, with fine depth at the core, lively acids and a chalky finish, it's a fine success.
While Michel Coutoux and his daughter Marlène bemoan the impact of climatic extremes on their vineyards—much of the replantings of the 1980s and 1990s, which ought to be entering their prime, will have to be replaced in the near future due to the degeneration of the 161-49 rootstock—the wines of Domaine Michel Niellon themselves remain remarkably unmarked by recent dry, warm vintages. The 2020s are no exception: lively, beautifully balanced and even comparatively tightly wound after their bottling before harvest 2021, they continue a strong recent run at this estate. As ever, bottling is under natural cork.

Domaine Michel Niellon is a winery located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune region (Burgundy, France).
History of Domaine Michel Niellon
The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when the family was founded by Michel Niellon's grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundian wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are located at different altitudes between 200 and 400 meters, which contributes to the unique character of their wines. Michel Niellon keeps it traditional. Many of their vineyards still contain vines planted by Marcel Niellon in 1926. When replanting is necessary, they use low yielding clones to ensure the grapes produced are highly concentrated and of superior quality.
Production by Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are picked by hand and strictly selected for quality. The fermentation process is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (typically 15% to 30%). Malolactic conversion and Sur Lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their icon, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. In addition, the Chassagne-Montrachet's of this product are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.
