the origin of Massetino
Massetino was first launched in 2017 as Masseto's second wine. The idea behind this creation was to create a wine that shares the same signature as the iconic Masseto, but with a more direct approachability and a slightly different style. While Masseto relies entirely on Merlot, Massetino also includes a portion of Cabernet Franc, which adds structure and freshness. Since its introduction, Massetino has built a solid reputation as a wine that combines the richness of Bolgheri with refinement and exceptional drinking pleasure, both young and after several years of aging.
the terroir of bolgheri
Like those of Masseto, Massetino's vineyards are located on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri. The terroir comprises a complex mix of blue clay, sand, and loam, which together create a unique soil for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea provides cooling breezes that temper the summer heat, while the cool September nights help preserve acidity and aromas. This interplay of soil and climate gives Massetino its characteristic balance of ripe fruit, structure, and elegance.
the 2023 harvest year
The year 2023 was characterized by challenges, but also by resilience. The winter was mild and slightly wetter than average, causing the growth cycle to begin early. Spring rains were abundant, which supplemented water reserves but also required additional work in the vineyard. Summer brought warm days around 35°C, without extreme peaks, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly. Rains in late August and cool nights in September added aromatic complexity, good acid structure, and a perfect balance between phenolic ripeness and sugar concentration. This resulted in high-quality grapes that demonstrate both power and finesse.
vinification and maturation of Massetino 2023
The grapes, composed of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, were harvested by hand and brought to the cellar in small 15-kilogram crates. After destemming and gentle crushing, the grapes were gravity-fed into concrete tanks, without pumping. Each vineyard parcel was fermented separately with indigenous yeasts at temperatures of 25-28°C. Maceration lasted 21 to 25 days, with daily reassembly as needed. Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques, 50% of which were new French oak. After 12 months of aging, the final blend was assembled, followed by a four-month rest period in concrete vats before bottling.
tasting notes of Massetino 2023
Massetino 2023 opens with an expressive bouquet of fresh red fruit, dominated by cherries and currants. Subtle spicy notes and a touch of floral elegance add complexity. On the palate, the wine displays juiciness and length, with a harmonious blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The texture is lively and energetic, supported by ripe yet refined tannins. The finish is fresh and slightly salty, giving the wine added dimension and refined tension. Drinkable even young, yet with sufficient structure to further develop in the coming years.
style and character
Massetino 2023 embodies the philosophy of a second wine: more accessible than Masseto, yet with a clear affinity in style. The emphasis is on vibrancy, youthful fruit, and immediate charm, while the Cabernet Franc adds complexity and elegance. This makes it ideal for connoisseurs who want to experience the Masseto signature, but with a wine that's ready to drink sooner and attractively priced compared to the iconic first wine.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
