Description
Le Serre Nuove is Tenuta Ornellaia's second wine. The winemakers decided to produce this wine while Ornellaia was blending. They were busy choosing the barriques, which ensure the suppleness of the structure, the fruit, and the characteristics of the terroir. The fruit discovered from the younger vines laid the foundation for this wine. An exceptionally beautiful wine, significantly more affordable than the cult Ornellaia. In the glass, the Serre Nuove is rich, concentrated, and ruby red. The aroma of this wine is toasted fruit, herbs, and hints of mint. The palate is full-bodied, with the spicy notes of the Merlot grapes, enriched with the fruity hints of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The Ornellaia vineyards are located near the renowned wine region of Bolgheri, in the Maremma region, near the Tuscan coast. Each of these vineyards has its own terroir and therefore has its own specific characteristics to achieve optimal quality of the vines. 9
After harvesting, which is separated by grape variety and carried out entirely by hand, the grapes are carefully selected for quality on large tables. The first fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26-30°C in steel tanks. The aging process continues for 17 months in French oak barriques. The blend is made after the wine has matured for 12 months in barriques (25% new barriques and 75% previously used barriques). After aging in the barriques, the wine is bottled. The bottles then remain in the estate's cellars for another six months to continue the aging process as optimally as possible and achieve the desired quality. After this, the wine is sufficiently matured to be released onto the market. The wine is always released around September/October of the year.

The Ornellaia 2022 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc that saw 15 months in barrique with one-third new oak. Following in the general Ornellaia philosophy, the team has been leaning off long maceration times for more delicate extraction. Blending for this wine usually occurs 12 months after fermentation. This vintage is structured and rich with sweet tannins and a supple texture. This hot vintage brings more fruit weight for sure, but the wine remains fresh and well balanced overall.
The 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is coming to market in March 2025, but the 2022 Masseto will not be released until September 2025. Today, Ornellaia counts 134 hectares of vines, including 11 hectares in Castagneto Carducci (with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Vermentino) that were added in 2022. Masseto covers 11 hectares of vines surrounded by forests. I tasted these wines with proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi at the estate. We were joined by the new Director of Production Marco Balsimelli, who worked in Bordeaux at the Laboratoire Oenologique Boissenot for 18 years before returning to his native Italy. He is joined by Ornellaia Winemaker Denise Cosentino and Vineyard Manager Giuliano Tarchi.

The 2023 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a delight. Crushed flowers, ripe red cherry fruit, spice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco are all nicely laced together. This mid-weight Serre Nuove is notable for its forward fruit, mid-weight structure and overall appeal. Floral top notes extend the effortless, silky finish.

These new releases from Ornellaia are very good examples for their respective vintages. Le Volte is especially fine in 2023. Its combination of floral top notes and vibrant fruit is quite appealing. The flagship Ornellaia shows how advantaged blends are in challenging vintages such as 2022. Fine-tuning makes all the difference. That is so evident in tasting Ornellaia next to some of the single-variety wines of Bolgheri. The 2022 is the last vintage vinified by Estate Director Axel Heinz, who left in early 2023. The new team, led by Winemaker Denise Cosentino and Production Manager Marco Balsimelli, finished and bottled the 2022s. Yields are down because of intense heat and drought. The winemaking team favored light extractions, with a bit more time on the skins than typical for the Merlot, as it was harder to extract.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
