Winery Château Suduiraut
Château Suduiraut is one of the most renowned houses in Sauternes and holds the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé classification from 1855. The estate is situated directly next to Château d'Yquem and is known for its elegant and precise style. The vineyards are managed with great care, with a strong focus on selection and timing of the harvest. Suduiraut combines tradition with modern insights, resulting in wines that are both rich and refined. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Sauternes is located south of Bordeaux and benefits from a unique microclimate due to the confluence of the Garonne and Ciron rivers. These conditions create morning mist that stimulates the development of noble rot (botrytis), followed by sunny afternoons that allow the grapes to ripen further. The 2023 vintage saw low yields, with only approximately 12 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in high concentration and intensity in the wines.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyards of Suduiraut consist primarily of Sémillon, supplemented with Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are harvested by hand in multiple passes, selecting only the grapes perfectly affected by botrytis. This meticulous approach ensures an optimal balance between sweetness, freshness, and aromatic complexity.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The harvest takes place in several selective rounds, depending on the development of botrytis. After picking, the grapes are gently pressed, followed by slow fermentation. The wine then ages in oak barrels, with a focus on integration and balance. The high residual sugar content of approximately 150 grams per liter is perfectly balanced by the acidity present, resulting in a refined and not heavy style.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a brilliant golden-yellow color with a bright sheen. On the nose, complex aromas of orange peel, mandarin, and exotic fruit emerge, complemented by notes of crème brûlée, honey, and floral nuances.
On the palate, the wine is silky smooth and perfectly balanced. The rich sweetness is supported by fresh acidity, keeping the wine light-footed and elegant. The texture is velvety and refined, with a layered structure. The finish is long and harmonious, featuring a combination of citrus, honey, and subtle spiciness. Despite the high sugar content, the wine remains remarkably fresh and precise.
Development and drinking window
The wine is accessible relatively early but also has excellent aging potential. The drinking window is between 2026 and 2043, during which the wine will develop towards greater complexity, with notes of dried fruit, honey, and spices.
Summary of professional reviews
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awards this wine 100 points and describes the 2023 as a modern Sauternes of finesse and precision. Aromas of orange peel, burnt sugar, and flowers combine with a silky texture. Despite approximately 150 grams of residual sugar, the wine remains perfectly balanced and extremely refined. One of the absolute highlights of the vintage.

CHÂTEAU SUDUIRAUT SAUTERNES 2023
Score
97-98
The purity of the botrytis grabs your attention, with density and intensity to the dried fruit, sweetness and length. Very spicy and long. Almost oily. Really rich. 150g/L residual sugar. 100% semillon.

From: 2023 Bordeaux: Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Mar 2026)
The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. It can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring or cellared for decades. The 2023 is a timeless wine that is among the most notable successes of the year.

The 2023 Suduiraut is a real stunner. Light on its feet yet wonderfully deep, the 2023 offers up a heady mix of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers, apricot and passion fruit. Readers will find a Sauternes that is more finesse than power. […]

Château Suduiraut: Premier Cru Classé from the Heart of Sauternes
Château Suduiraut stands among the elite producers of Sauternes. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, this estate has earned its reputation through centuries of excellence. With roots tracing back to the 16th century and vineyards adjacent to Château d’Yquem, Suduiraut is renowned for crafting refined sweet wines and, more recently, outstanding dry white cuvées from old vines.
A Unique Terroir in Preignac
Located in Preignac, in the southern part of Bordeaux, Château Suduiraut spans 91 hectares planted on a mosaic of gravelly sand and clay soils. The estate's proximity to the Ciron river ensures the morning mists and warm afternoons necessary for the development of Botrytis cinerea—the noble rot essential to the world’s greatest sweet wines.
Style: Luscious Sweet Wines, Vibrant Dry Whites
Suduiraut is famed for its 100% Sémillon-based Sauternes, distinguished by their clarity, length, and layered aromas of candied citrus, honey, flowers, and spice. The wines mature for 16 to 20 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, developing beautifully over decades.
In recent years, Suduiraut has also gained recognition for its dry white wines:
- Château Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes Blanc Sec – a Grand Vin with depth and aging potential.
- Pur Sémillon – a rare and pure expression of the grape.
- Lions de Suduiraut – fresh, vibrant, and highly food-friendly.
Today, 65% of Suduiraut’s production is dedicated to dry whites, reflecting its innovative and forward-thinking winemaking philosophy.
Innovation Under AXA Millésimes
Since 1992, Château Suduiraut has been part of AXA Millésimes, the prestigious group behind leading estates such as Pichon Baron, Petit Village, and Quinta do Noval. Under the leadership of Christian Seely and technical director Pierre Montégut, both vineyard management and vinification have reached new heights. Traditional techniques are enhanced with modern precision—from gentle pressing and native yeast fermentation to tailored bâtonnage and barrel aging.
