Winery Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut belongs to the absolute top of Sauternes and was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In addition to the famous sweet wines, the estate also produces a dry white wine under the name Lions de Suduiraut. Here, the focus is on freshness, precision, and terroir expression. The same attention to detail and selection is applied, resulting in a wine with depth and refinement. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

The wine comes from Sauternes, in the south of Bordeaux, where a unique microclimate ensures optimal ripening of the grapes. Although the region is known for its sweet wines, the limestone and gravelly soils also lend themselves perfectly to dry white wines with tension and aromatic precision. The 2024 vintage is characterized by lively acidity and a fresh style, which perfectly matches the character of this wine.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend consists of 56% Sémillon, 29% Sauvignon Blanc, and 15% Sauvignon Gris. This combination ensures both aromatic expression and structure. Sémillon provides body and roundness, while Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris contribute freshness, spiciness, and tension. The grapes are sourced from carefully selected plots within the estate.

Harvest, vinification and aging

After the harvest, the grapes are carefully pressed and vinified while preserving freshness and aromatic purity. Approximately 70% of the wine ages in stainless steel tanks to maintain the fresh style, while 30% ages in wooden barrels to add extra structure and complexity. This combination creates a balance between liveliness and depth.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a clear, light yellow color with a fresh appearance. On the nose, expressive aromas of citrus, orchard fruit, and white flowers emerge, complemented by spicy notes such as sage, mint, and a light vegetal touch reminiscent of tomato leaf.

On the palate, the wine is lively and crisp, with fresh acidity providing tension and precision. The structure is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with a refined texture and a clear focus on freshness. The finish is clean and energetic, with a slightly saline and aromatic finale that invites another sip.

Development and drinking window

The wine is intended to be drunk relatively young, but can also develop positively over several years. The drinking window is between 2026 and 2032, during which the wine retains its freshness and aromatic expression.

Summary of professional reviews

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awards 92 points and describes the wine as intensely aromatic with notes of orchard fruit, flowers, and herbs, supported by fresh acidity. Yohan Castaing (The Wine Advocate, 90 points) emphasizes the tension and liveliness, with aromas of citrus, kumquat, and floral notes, and a refined, ethereal finish. Château Suduiraut: Premier Cru Classé from the Heart of Sauternes

Château Suduiraut stands among the elite producers of Sauternes. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, this estate has earned its reputation through centuries of excellence. With roots tracing back to the 16th century and vineyards adjacent to Château d’Yquem, Suduiraut is renowned for crafting refined sweet wines and, more recently, outstanding dry white cuvées from old vines.

A Unique Terroir in Preignac

Located in Preignac, in the southern part of Bordeaux, Château Suduiraut spans 91 hectares planted on a mosaic of gravelly sand and clay soils. The estate's proximity to the Ciron river ensures the morning mists and warm afternoons necessary for the development of Botrytis cinerea—the noble rot essential to the world’s greatest sweet wines.

Style: Luscious Sweet Wines, Vibrant Dry Whites

Suduiraut is famed for its 100% Sémillon-based Sauternes, distinguished by their clarity, length, and layered aromas of candied citrus, honey, flowers, and spice. The wines mature for 16 to 20 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, developing beautifully over decades.

In recent years, Suduiraut has also gained recognition for its dry white wines:

  • Château Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes Blanc Sec – a Grand Vin with depth and aging potential.
  • Pur Sémillon – a rare and pure expression of the grape.
  • Lions de Suduiraut – fresh, vibrant, and highly food-friendly.

Today, 65% of Suduiraut’s production is dedicated to dry whites, reflecting its innovative and forward-thinking winemaking philosophy.

Innovation Under AXA Millésimes

Since 1992, Château Suduiraut has been part of AXA Millésimes, the prestigious group behind leading estates such as Pichon Baron, Petit Village, and Quinta do Noval. Under the leadership of Christian Seely and technical director Pierre Montégut, both vineyard management and vinification have reached new heights. Traditional techniques are enhanced with modern precision—from gentle pressing and native yeast fermentation to tailored bâtonnage and barrel aging.
