Château Saint-Pierre Winery

Château Saint-Pierre is a historic Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien and one of the appellation's most established names. The estate is known for its classic style, focusing on precision, structure, and aging potential. The wines combine concentration with freshness and are characterized by a clear expression of origin. In recent years, increased attention has been paid to refinement in extraction and aging, without losing sight of the traditional character.

More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Saint-Pierre is located in the heart of Saint-Julien, on deep gravel soils with a clay sub-layer. This location ensures excellent drainage and contributes to the combination of power and elegance so characteristic of the appellation. The 2023 vintage experienced variable weather conditions, but careful selection produced wines with fresh acidity and a clear structure.

Vineyards

The vineyards consist of carefully selected parcels within Saint-Julien, with a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are of average age and produce low yields, contributing to concentration and depth. In 2023, a strict selection process was carried out to use only the finest fruit.

Grape varieties and composition

The 2023 blend consists of 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 17 percent Merlot, and 3 percent Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, providing structure, freshness, and length, while Merlot adds roundness. Petit Verdot brings extra spice and depth.

Harvest, vinification and maturation

The grapes were harvested by hand and vinified by plot. The extraction focuses on balance and finesse, in keeping with the château's classic style. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, some new, where the wood is carefully integrated to support the fruit and structure without dominating it.

Color, smell and taste

The wine displays a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals aromas of cassis, dark berries, and black plums, complemented by notes of incense, graphite, and crushed stones. Subtle floral accents of lavender and hints of dried herbs and spices add further depth. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with good concentration in the mid-palate. The tannins are fine-grained and precise, supported by lively acidity that adds tension and length. The overall finish is taut and classically structured, with a long, mineral finish.

Development and drinking window

Château Saint-Pierre 2023 received its first ranking of 92–94 and 93–95, respectively, indicating a high level of quality. The expected drinking window begins around 2030 and extends to 2045. The wine will clearly benefit from bottle aging and will continue to refine over time.

Summary of professional reviews

William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rated the wine en primeur 92-94 points, describing it as a classically proportioned Saint-Julien with depth, powdery tannins, and crisp acidity. Antonio Galloni of Vinous awarded the wine 93-95 points, highlighting its character, the combination of dark fruit, gravel, and spice, and the incisive structure that needs time to soften. Both reviewers consider this vintage a very serious and cellar-oriented Saint-Julien.
