Chateau Mangot has been able to hold the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé title since last year. The wine was also included last year by William Kelley of Wine Advocate in his '12 Wines to Look for En Primeur 2022' The 2023 Château Mangot is indeed an exceptional wine from an ever-improving estate, with a blend that is both complex and harmonious . Another beautiful wine from this perpetually improving property, the 2023 Château Mangot delivers aromas of blackberries and mulberries mingled with hints of licorice, pencil shavings, bay leaf and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, complete profile and impressive mid-palate density, it's a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with élevage combining, as usual, new oak, used barriques, foudre and amphorae.
This dynamic 37-hectare estate is located in Saint Étienne de Lisse on clay-limestone soils. It's a single block, ranging from the plateau above the château to the plateau below, with slopes and terraces in between. Farming is organic, with seeded cover crops retained year-round, and vinification is parcel by parcel to produce the best components to inform the optimal assemblage. It's planted with some 75% Merlot, but that's tending to decline at the expense of Cabernet Franc, little by little, as blocks are replanted, and élevage unites traditional barriques with less-oxidative vessels such as amphorae, of which Mangot was a pioneer. The style emphasizes precision and purity of fruit without any obtrusive winemaking signatures. On a qualitative roll, Mangot is one of the best values in contemporary Bordeaux, and the 2023 vintage is another strong effort. The Todeschini family reacted to conditions with rigorous sorting and by shortening the duration of pre-fermentation macerations and alcoholic fermentation, working the ferments even less than usual.

Situated to the east of the Saint-Emilion appellation, within the boundaries of Saint Étienne de Lisse, Château Mangot consists of 37 hectares in a single stretch, of which 34 hectares are planted with vines. With numerous ecological compensation areas (hedges, woods, embankments, grassy strips, etc.) making up 15% of the surface area, biodiversity is a real boon for the Mangot terroir, or rather its terroirs…
Facing due south, the Mangot combe or cirque offers 4 zones of terroirs: foot of the slopes, slopes, terraces and plateaux. These different terroirs include 21 separate plots at altitudes varying between 35 and 86 metres, the highest point in the appellation. From a geological point of view, asteriated limestone lies over a bed of limestone molasses (soft rock), with outcrops on the slopes (15% slope) around the limestone plateaux. This greater limestone presence gives the Mangot wines density and fullness whilst retaining freshness, tightness and minerality. This diversity of clay-limestone terroirs is what makes for interesting final blends, providing consistency in quality, whilst preserving the identity of the terroir and the typical character of the vintages.
