The 2016 Château Mangot is indeed an exceptional wine from a constantly improving estate, with a blend that is both complex and harmonious. Here is a more detailed description of its characteristics:

Aromas:

  • Fruit: Dominated by rich notes of blackberry and mulberry, offering a lush and ripe fruit profile.
  • Secondary Notes: Complemented by subtle hints of licorice, adding a touch of sweetness and depth.
  • Terroir and Herbs: Pencil shavings provide a subtle minerality, while bay leaf adds an earthy, spicy note.
  • Floral: Violets add an elegant, floral scent, enhancing the aromatic complexity.

Structure and Profile:

  • Body: Medium to full bodied, creating a robust yet balanced mouthfeel.
  • Depth and Layering: The wine is deep and layered, indicating a well-structured complexity that unfolds over time.
  • Mid-palate density: Impressively dense mid-palate, indicating concentration and richness without being too heavy.

Blend Composition:

  • Merlot (65%): Provides softness, fruitiness and roundness.
  • Cabernet Franc (30%): Adds structure, elegance and aromatic complexity.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (5%): Contributes tannic backbone, longevity and dark fruit notes.

Aging Process:

  • New Oak and Used Barriques: New oak adds vanilla, spice, and extra complexity, while used barriques help these flavors integrate smoothly.
  • Foudre: Large wooden barrels that allow for gentle oxidation, preserving the freshness and fruit purity of the wine.
  • Amphoras: Clay vessels that contribute to the purity of fruit aromas and enhance texture without adding oak influence.

Overall, the 2023 Château Mangot offers a seamless and complete profile, combining the richness and depth of a great Bordeaux blend with modern winemaking techniques that emphasize the purity and complexity of its components.

Situated to the east of the Saint-Emilion appellation, within the boundaries of Saint Étienne de Lisse, Château Mangot consists of 37 hectares in a single stretch, of which 34 hectares are planted with vines. With numerous ecological compensation areas (hedges, woods, embankments, grassy strips, etc.) making up 15% of the surface area, biodiversity is a real boon for the Mangot terroir, or rather its terroirs…

Facing due south, the Mangot combe or cirque offers 4 zones of terroirs: foot of the slopes, slopes, terraces and plateaux. These different terroirs include 21 separate plots at altitudes varying between 35 and 86 metres, the highest point in the appellation. From a geological point of view, asteriated limestone lies over a bed of limestone molasses (soft rock), with outcrops on the slopes (15% slope) around the limestone plateaux. This greater limestone presence gives the Mangot wines density and fullness whilst retaining freshness, tightness and minerality. This diversity of clay-limestone terroirs is what makes for interesting final blends, providing consistency in quality, whilst preserving the identity of the terroir and the typical character of the vintages.
