The Antinori family and almost a century of Villa Antinori tradition

Villa Antinori is a wine with history and vision. First produced in 1928, it has been a model of Tuscan elegance and continuity ever since. The Antinori family, leaders in Italian winemaking for over six centuries, have made the Villa Antinori label a symbol of experiment and tradition.

With the foundation of the Antinori Chianti Classico wine cellar in Bargino, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG, a new chapter began. Here it was decided to enrich the classic Villa Antinori with a Riserva cuvée: a wine that combines Chianti’s classic character with structure, complexity and finesse. The vineyards benefit from chalky soils, Mediterranean sunshine and cooling temperature differences between day and night – ideal for the Sangiovese grape, the beating heart of Chianti Classico.

Chianti Classico Riserva 2022: expression of a strong wine year

The 2022 growing season began with a dry winter and spring. The summer was warm, with above-average temperatures in June and July. Nevertheless, the vines showed remarkable resilience. Thanks to a balanced fruit set and a rain shower in August, followed by cool nights and sunny days, ripening went optimally. This ensured excellent aromatic intensity and a nice acidity, essential for a balanced Riserva.

The harvest began in late September with Sangiovese and ended in early October with the other grape varieties. The grapes arrived in the cellar in excellent health and aromatic richness, ready for careful vinification.

Vinification and maturation: traditional approach with modern precision

After harvesting, the grapes were destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28 to 30°C, with a skin maceration of 10 to 14 days. Automated techniques were used to optimize the extraction of aromas, structure and soft tannins.

The malolactic fermentation took place partly in steel, partly in used barriques. After the assembly, the wine matured further in a combination of large oak barrels and a smaller part barriques until the spring of 2024. Bottling began in July 2024. This process created a harmonious balance between wood influence, fruit expression and elegance.

Color, aroma and taste: classic Chianti with modern elegance

The 2022 Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva presents itself with a bright ruby red color. The bouquet is layered and seductive, with notes of blackcurrant, medlar jam and raspberry jelly. These fruity aromas are refined by smoky nuances of tobacco, liquorice, candied lemon and a touch of cocoa powder.

In the mouth the wine is silky and balanced. Finely integrated tannins support a full, enveloping attack and turn into a long, vertical finish. Subtle notes of rose petals and black tea add depth and finesse. This Riserva is already accessible, but will develop further in elegance in the coming years.

More information about Antinori

Marquis Piero Antinori is in charge and is assisted by his three daughters: Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Funny those three A's. We are not going to bother you with all the awards that have been received over the years, because then this price list can no longer go through the letterbox. There are two red wines that are available on allocation and that one would like to get a few bottles from all over the world and that are Tignanello and Solaia and we also have these in our range at Grandcruwijnen.

In 1180, Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccino were officially named as owners of Castello di Combiate; a century later, the family who had moved to Florence were included in the register of the silk trade cooperative. In 1385, Giovanni di Piero, an indirect descendant, entered the wine guild as an apprentice. Since then, the wine-growing tradition of the Antinori family has been continuous. With the establishment of the Marchesi Antinori winery, the peak was reached in 1895 and already in 1898 the winery was built in San Casciano Val di Pesa, which is still the center of the widely branched group of properties in all major cultivation areas of Tuscany, Umbria. , Piemonte (since the early 90s through the purchase of the wine cellar Prunotto), Apulia and even California. The traditional house participating in the modern Tuscan wine-growing revolution owes much of its prestige to its former chief vinologist Giacomo Tachis, who produced exceptional wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello (especially sangiovese), Solaia (especially cabernet) and many others. the other was responsible. Vinologist Renzo Cotarella also created one of the best chardonnays in Italy in the Umbrian Castello della Sala.
