Au Bon Climat and the origins of Hildegard
Au Bon Climat is one of Santa Barbara County's most influential wineries, known for its consistent style and long aging. Founder Jim Clendenen drew strong inspiration from Burgundy but adapted his ideas to the cooler coastal climate of California. Hildegard holds a special place within the range. First produced in 1998, this wine is named after Hildegard, the wife of Charlemagne.
During Charlemagne's reign, viticulture played a significant role, and grape varieties like Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Aligoté were common in what would later become Corton-Charlemagne. This historical fact formed the foundation for Hildegard. Since its first vintage, this wine has been a fixture in the Blue Series and one of the house's most recognizable white wines.

Vineyard Bien Nacido and grape composition
The grapes for the 2022 Au Bon Climat Hildegard come from the Bien Nacido Vineyard, one of Santa Barbara County's most renowned vineyards. The soil and location of this vineyard are ideal for aromatic, structured white grapes.
The wine is composed of 50% Pinot Gris, 45% Pinot Blanc, and 5% Aligoté. Pinot Gris provides body and ripe fruit, Pinot Blanc brings freshness and refinement, while Aligoté adds tension and a mineral undertone. Together, they create a balanced and expressive blend.
Harvest and vinification of the 2022 vintage
The 2022 harvest began under favorable conditions but was accelerated later in the season by higher temperatures. Despite lower yields, the fruit quality remained high. Pinot Gris was harvested on August 16, 2022, followed by Pinot Blanc on September 6, 2022.
All grapes were harvested by hand and processed separately. The bunches were pressed whole, after which both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place in barrel. This approach contributes to texture and complexity. By treating the varietals separately, their character remains clearly discernible until the moment of blending.
Maturation in new French oak and sur lie maturation
After fermentation, the 2022 Hildegard matured for sixteen months in 100% new French oak barrels from François Frères. This aging gives the wine depth, spice, and structure. During this period, the wine remained in prolonged contact with the fine lees, which added extra creaminess and a layered texture.
The combination of new oak and sur lie aging requires precision, but produces a well-balanced wine. The alcohol is 13.5%, with a refreshing acidity of 6.5 g/l and a pH of 3.36.

Always a singular highlight in the Au Bon Climat portfolio, the 2022 Hildegard recreates the 19th-century layout of Corton-Charlemagne, blending Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc (from Bien Nacido) with Aligoté (from Le Bon Climat). Its maturation in 100% new barrels provides a rich, toasty opulence that remains impressively classy and composed, layered with vanilla pod, toasted hazelnut and flinty flourishes. The palate unfolds as expected with a glossy, full-bodied and decadent profile, energized by a lively backbone of minerality that offers drive and persistence.
As much change as Aun Bon Climat has experienced since the passing of Jim Clendenen, the wines remain staunchly and unabashedly true to his vision. As a family affair that has existed for decades, the winery is filled with long-standing staff members who ensure that daily operations remain essentially unchanged. More leadership changes are soon to be underway, as longtime general manager Jim Adleman will retire following the conclusion of the 2025 harvest. Along with veteran winemakers Marc Piro and Enrique Rodriguez, Knox Clendenen has been overseeing cellar and harvest logistics, and his sister, Isabelle, has focused on brand representation and sales.
Chardonnay production focuses on whole-cluster pressing and barrel fermentations with extended aging to increase lees contact, ending with bentonite fining and a light filtration. The Pinot Noirs experience the full spectrum of whole-bunch retention, ranging from the completely destemmed Isabelle bottling, the 100% whole-cluster Larmes de Grappe and the inclusion of one-third whole clusters in the Knox Alexander. Pinot Noirs are fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered. A high proportion of new, heavy toast François Frères barrels have always been and still are the order of the day across both varieties, sourced through a futures contract in which the winery secures three-year air-dried staves in advance.

The 2022 White Hildegard Estate is superb. This blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Aligoté fared exceptionally well in this vintage. Orchard fruit, citrus peel, white pepper and slate lend notable cut. This vibrant, steely white marries freshness and textural resonance. It's one of the top wines here in 2022.

Jim Clendenen passed away in early 2021, but his style is very much alive at Au Bon Climat and Clendenen Family Vintners. Élevage for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is on the longer side relative to present-day standards. New oak is often in the 75-100% range, although increasingly, the preference leans toward 350-liter barrels. As usual, the Pinots are done with a high percentage of whole clusters. These wines continue to represent classicism in Santa Barbara. Clendenen succeeded in achieving that most elusive of elements in wine: balance. It’s great to see these wines showing so well.
