Description
The rich history of Schloss Johannisberg
Schloss Johannisberg is one of the most historic wineries in the world. Wine has been produced on this hill in the Rheingau for over 1,200 years, and exclusively Riesling since 1720. This makes Johannisberg the cradle of this grape variety in Germany. The imposing castle sits above the Rhine, surrounded by 50 hectares of vineyards that form a semicircle around the estate. Today, the estate belongs to the Oetker family, who continue this legacy with respect for tradition and innovation. Viticulture here is entirely focused on creating wines that showcase the unique expression of the terroir.
The terroir and climate of the Rheingau
The Rheingau is one of Germany's most prestigious wine regions, known for its steep slopes and southerly location along the Rhine. The Schloss Johannisberg vineyard descends in terraces to the river and benefits from an ideal microclimate: abundant sunlight, cool nights, and water reflection. The soil consists of Taunus quartzite with fertile loam and loess, supplemented with a small amount of iron oxide that gives the soil a reddish hue. This creates a pronounced minerality and tension in the wines, with a recognizable salty note typical of the best Rheingau Rieslings.
The harvest and vinification of the Goldlack 2022
The 2022 Goldlack is made entirely from hand-picked Riesling grapes, sourced from the vineyards immediately surrounding the château. Harvest began early, on September 19th, after an exceptionally warm and dry growing season. Despite the heat, grapes with a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity were harvested. The grapes were gently pressed after 48 hours of maceration. Fermentation took place in large wooden barrels made of oak from the estate's own forest. The wine then matured for 24 months on the fine lees in the famous underground Bibliotheca Subterranea, where a constant temperature of 10.5°C prevails. Bottling took place in the spring of 2024, after which the wine was allowed to rest in the bottle until September. The result is a wine of great complexity and depth, reflecting the time and attention given at every stage.
Taste profile of the Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack Trocken 2022
The Goldlack 2022 is simultaneously refined and powerful. The aroma reveals ripe notes of apricot, yellow plum, and jasmine blossom, complemented by subtle hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and a touch of mint and thyme. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with an impressive balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality. The structure is precise, taut, and slightly saline, with a spicy spiciness and a lingering finish. The finish is intense and long, a hallmark of top wines from this legendary vineyard. The 12% alcohol and 7.6g/l acidity provide freshness and elegance, while 3.9g/l residual sugar gives the wine a subtly rounded character.
Reviews from international wine critics
The international press is unanimously praising the 2022 Goldlack. James Suckling awarded the wine a remarkable 99 points , calling it "a wine with flinty vitality and super-dense apricot and mirabelle notes, with a huge wave of stony minerality and a finish as still as a mountain lake." He believes this wine has almost infinite aging potential. Vinous also rated the wine exceptionally high, scoring 96 points , describing it as "a Riesling that rises above the level of the Grosses Gewächs, with a silky structure and an ethereal freshness of chamomile and white flowers. Everything about this wine is balanced: rich yet delicate, vibrant and long." According to Vinous, the 2022 Goldlack will continue to develop until at least 2060, making it one of the estate's longest-lasting dry Rieslings.
The 2022 vintage in the Rheingau
The 2022 vintage was challenging but exceptional for winegrowing in the Rheingau. A warm and dry spring was followed by a hot summer with record temperatures, while rain in September offered some relief. This alternating drought and rain resulted in grapes with high concentration and aromatic intensity. For a wine like Goldlack, this resulted in an expressive, mineral style with perfect ripeness and vibrant freshness – a vintage that is already showing its full potential, but can still age for decades.

Wine and food pairings at Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack 2022
The Goldlack 2022 is versatile at the table and pairs beautifully with dishes that possess both finesse and depth. Grilled sea bass with lemon butter complements the wine's briny minerality perfectly. A risotto with saffron and green asparagus enhances the spicy and floral notes. Roast veal fillet with chanterelles and celeriac purée is also a classic pairing that emphasizes the wine's concentration. Try it with scallops in truffle cream sauce for a luxurious pairing that perfectly balances the tension between creaminess and acidity. Finally, a slightly spicy curry with coconut and lime makes a surprisingly refreshing combination, allowing the Riesling to fully express its aromatic power.

Bottled in April this year, the straw-yellow 2022 Schloss Johannisberg Gelblack Riesling Trocken opens with an intensely fruity yet also pure and spicy, classic Johannisberg nose, with ripe and full Riesling aromas and just a kiss of traditional oak. This medium to full-bodied wine is round, refined and elegant on the palate, quite supple and mouth-filling but also expressive due to its mineral structure. The finish is savory and fresh, with lemon notes. Excellent quality. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023.
Stefan Doktor reports "good results" from a "difficult vintage." He is a luge racer and draws a comparison with his sport: "Just as I, as a light luger, need technically challenging tracks to finish earlier than others, I also like challenging vintages, because anyone can make good wines in easy years."
The challenges of the vintage lay in the long dry period during July and August, which dried out the soil and caused problems for young vines in particular, but not only, which meant the vines usually had to be relieved early. Barren sites also suffered from the drought, as there was no water available. The supply of nutrients was also problematic due to the drought, but then there was rain in September. The plants breathed a sigh of relief, but the berries also soaked up the water and therefore hardly increased in must weight. Sorting was therefore also a top priority in the fall of 2022. Even more than rot (there was hardly any noble botrytis, but there was gray rot), dried-out, unripe berries made life difficult for the harvesters. These were not allowed in the bucket under any circumstances, even if they looked healthy, and should actually be cut to the ground before the main harvest. Rotten and noble rotten berries are taboo at Schloss Johannisberg for all wines below the Spätlese and Auslese predicates. Botrytis cinerea was not even selected in 2022, but two magnificent Spätleses were, which are two of the three highlights of the vintage.
"We harvested quite late in 2022, but only during the breaks in the rain," reports Doktor. His team began picking at the end of September (significantly later than Eva Fricke just a few kilometers to the west) and finished around 20 October.
In addition to the two Spätleses, of which one (Fass 364) initially should have been part of the Grosses Gewächs but stopped fermenting far too early, the most impressive Riesling from the vintage is the dry Goldkapsel, which is flanked by the late-release 2020 dry Riesling Fass Nr. 300 Ex Bibliotheca subterranea.

For a vintage that was so challenging, because it was so hot and so dry, this has an amazing, flinty vitality and super-dense apricot, apricot-skin and mirabelle-plum flavors on the very focused, medium-bodied palate. Then a huge wave of stone minerality hits you but, after it has passed, the finish is as still as a mountain lake. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Almost limitless aging potential. Drink from release.

From: Rheingau and Nahe 2024: Rain, Frost and Unexpected Brilliance (Sep 2025)
The 2022 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack is a dry wine to sit above the GG with extended aging on lees in the lowest, coolest part of the historic cellar. It has a shimmering golden hue and projects a supple, smooth coolness. A bigger glass and more air underline an ethereal lift of cooling chamomile and white flowers. The palate unfolds like cashmere, tender and weighty, yet not bearing down. Everything here is united. Rich yeast is merely creamy and lemony. All of this is slenderness, absolute calmness and vivid length. The 2022 is a different kind of Riesling that needs time and will reward it. (Bone-dry)
- By Anne Krebiehl, MW on June 2025
Stefan Doktor, managing director at Schloss Johannisberg, set his sights on an early, speedy harvest in 2024. The team started picking Sekt base on September 19, and the main harvest began on September 23. When the big rain front came on October 7 and 8, harvest was almost complete. Doktor had hoped for the development of botrytis, but 2024 was the first time in 40 years that the estate did not make an Auslese. “We did not pick a single botrytized grape in 2024,” Doktor said. “That hurts, as nobody here can remember it ever happening before. It is not what we wished for.” In the end, sorting meant that yields amounted to around one-third less than the long-term average, but, as Doktor emphasized, “sorting was everything.” The wines repaid the effort. Schloss Johannisberg presented an exquisite collection in 2024. Doktor’s very clear vision has resulted in longer lees-aging and ever more brightness.

Schloss Johannisberg bottles "Qualitätswein" under a label with a yellow seal. The Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (quality wines with special properties) are classified as follows: Rotlach for the medium quality cabinet wines, Orangelach for the best cabinet wines, Grünlach for the average Spätlesen, Weisslach for the large Spätlesen, Rosalach for the Auslesen, Blaulach for the best qualities Auslese and Goldlach for the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen. Bad years do not deliver superior quality wine; The Auslesen with sky blue seal and the Beerenauslesen with gold seal will therefore not be found. Sometimes a sparkling wine is made from the lighter and less good Riesling wine, which is sold under the name Fürst von Metternich Prädikats-Sekt.
Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau is undoubtedly Germany's most prestigious winery and the world renowned for its Rieslings. It is the oldest Riesling winery in the world. Wine has been made since 817 and 100% Riesling has been produced since 1720. The winery is centrally located in the area and has a rich history. Originally it was a monastery that was later used as a castle. It was even once owned by our royal family. The wines are the most elegant in the Rheingau area and gain in balance and flexibility as they age. In the beautiful wine cellar, a few bottles have been kept since 1748, so that now a unique collection has been created. Once every 25 years, the wines are inspected and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!
