Description
A Riesling with tension, freshness and character – that is the 2022 from Domaine Allimant-Laugner.
Domaine Allimant-Laugner Riesling
The Allimant-Laugner family estate is located in the village of Orschwiller, at the foot of the Haut-Koenigsbourg in Alsace. Its history goes back centuries: the Allimant and Laugner families have been working these slopes since the 17th century. In 1816, François-Antoine Allimant purchased vineyards and a farmhouse dating back to 1664, which remains their home base today. Now, the twelfth generation is at the helm: Nicolas Laugner, who combines tradition with a modern and sustainable approach. The result? Wines that are pure, precise, and distinctly Alsatian.
Allimant-Laugner Vineyards
The grapes for this Riesling grow on granite soils . This gives the wine its tension and recognizable mineral freshness. Riesling is the last grape to ripen in Alsace. However, the 2022 harvest was already harvested in the third week of September, allowing the wine to retain its lemony, lively freshness. The vines are located in vineyards that are currently undergoing organic conversion , with the family consciously choosing a natural approach and respect for biodiversity.
Tasting notes for the Allimant-Laugner Riesling
The Allimant-Laugner Riesling Vin d'Alsace has a fresh aroma of citrus and white flowers. On the palate, it is ample and full-bodied, with a light oiliness that carries the fruit beautifully. The finish reveals subtle notes of hay and flowers. It has an alcohol content of 12.5% and, with 3.9 grams of residual sugar per liter, is a dry style. The wine has an acidity of 6.2 g/l, which gives it its energy and length. Serve it at around 8°C (46°F) to best express its refreshing character.
Parker 90/100: "Elegant and filigreed on the palate, this is a rather light, stimulating and dry but also round and balanced Alsace Riesling classic with lots of charm, finesse and a good, mineral finish. This is an excellent Riesling to be enjoyed with food"
Suckling 91/100: "Clean and crisp on the palate with medium body and tangy acidity. Mellow and delicious."
Maturation and storage potential
While this Riesling is already wonderfully accessible, it has aging potential for 10 to 15 years. In the coming years, the wine will develop more roundness and complexity, with riper aromas and a softer structure. This makes it appealing to both those who enjoy it immediately and those who want to cellar a few bottles.
Interesting facts
- The family has been making wine in Orschwiller for more than 10 generations.
- The Riesling is fermented with natural yeasts and in stainless steel tanks to keep the fruit fresh.
- The domain works with a modern pneumatic press and consciously opts for a minimal ecological footprint.
- The 2023 is internationally acclaimed, with scores of 91 points from James Suckling and 90 points from Parker.

The 2023 Riesling Vin d'Alsace from Allimant-Laugner in Orschwiller is from 40-year-old vines on granitic soils and offers a clear, pure and precise, finely fragrant bouquet with floral notes intermingled with ripe, white rather than yellow fruit aromas. Elegant and filigreed on the palate, this is a rather light, stimulating and dry but also round and balanced Alsace Riesling classic with lots of charm, finesse and a good, mineral finish. This is an excellent Riesling to be enjoyed with food. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam 5 cork. Tasted in February 2025.
The origins of this Orschwiller domaine go back 200 years, when François-Antoine Allimant bought the property. But wine has only been bottled under the Allimant name since 1949, when Charles Allimant started to bottle his wine and developed the wine distribution with his daughter Mariette and her husband, René Laugner. The Laugner's eldest son, Hubert, took over in 1984 and gave the domaine its current name. Hubert’s son Nicolas Laugner has been with the company since 2013 and is now responsible for the wines.
Today, all seven major grape varieties of Alsace are cultivated on 12 hectares of vines and in 40 plots, with different orientations, vine ages and soils. The vineyards are located between Saint-Hippolyte in the south and Châtenois in the north. For this report, I tasted the Rieslings and Gewürztraminer from the granite soils north of Orschwiller. To the south, heavy clay and limestone soils prevail, on which Pinot varieties are grown. The most prestigious site is 18.7 hectares (46 acres) on granite and gneiss on the hill of the grand cru Praelatenberg, which has been planted with vines since the ninth century. The vineyards are cultivated organically (certified organic since 2023), with green space in every second row. The gently pressed grapes are fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wines of this domaine are fresh, clear, elegant and gastronomically conceived. They are extremely stimulating and appetizing. The 2023 Alsace Gewurztraminer is a great savior for the unfashionable variety, which guarantees a wine of excellent quality in the Prälatenberg. The Riesling does the same, but it is more sharply defined.

"Notes of crushed dandelion leaves and green apple on the nose of this wine have the slightest edge of yeast. The palate is lively and frothy, edging close to creaminess, while the finish is dry and lasting." Anne Krebiehl, MW

The origins of Domaine Allimant-Laugner begin with 2 families who have cultivated the vineyards since the 17th century, the Laugners in the village of Dieffenthal and the Allimants in Saint-Hippolyte. In 1816 and after participating in all of Napoleon's campaigns, Captain François-Antoine Allimant buys more vines on the Haut-Koenigsbourg hills and a beautiful 1664 farm in the village of Orschwiller, the current property of the domain.
Like most families, the Allimants still subsisted on growing more crops but chose to focus more on wine with Charles Allimant, who began bottling his wine in 1949 and developed their distribution with his daughter Mariette and her husband René Laugner. . Their eldest son Hubert took over in 1984, gave the domain real fame together with his wife Françoise, and since 2013 with their son Nicolas. The family manages Domaine Allimant-Laugner as a beautiful heritage of more than 10 generations.
The 7 varieties from Alsace (Alsace) are grown on a total of 12 hectares of vines, representing 40 separate plots of different orientations, ages and terroirs. This division of parcels is essential for the varieties to be properly expressed on the right grounds. South of the village, between Orschwiller and Saint-Hippolyte, the heavy clay and limestone soils are particularly suitable for the Pinots. North of the village as far as Châtenois there are granitic soils which allow the production of more aromatic Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Above Orschwiller, the granite and schist hills of the Praelatenberg have been turned into vines since the 9th century. This terroir allows the production of precise and very typical wines, naturally classified as Grand Cru d'Alsace. The plots have a density of more than 5500 vines per hectare, which promotes competition and deeper rooting, for better typicity. The more competition the harder a grape has to work and the deeper it has to root. Bad for high volumes but perfect for quality and that is what this house stands for.
The demand for sparkling wine is also growing in the region and the Crémants Blanc and Rosé, produced by the traditional method with our local varieties, represent half of the production of Domaine Allimant-Laugner and have certainly given the house much more international fame. after each and every one of the wines has received very high ratings from the international wine press.
The privilege of a product of this unique authentic terroir also entails a responsibility and so Domaine Allimant-Laugner works naturally with the greatest respect for the environment. All tasks (plant pruning, picking, maintenance) are done naturally, also because the close contact with the vines gives a better understanding of the needs. In order to properly control the vigor of the vines and preserve the ecosystem, work is mainly done with alternating plowed and grassy rows. Also in the cellar, modernity and tradition must be well balanced to produce accurate and refined wines, but with a minimal human and ecological imprint. They work with a brand new pneumatic press and stainless steel tanks with temperature control and fermentation takes place only with natural yeasts. The foundation is laid in the unique vineyards which have been managed by the family for 10 generations. With respect and modernity, Domaine Allimant-Laugner makes great wines.
