RedHeads Wines: origin, philosophy and climate

RedHeads Wines was founded in 2002 in South Australia and started as a small cellar where young winemakers experimented with small batches of grapes. RedHeads has since grown into a serious producer with a modern, sustainable wine cellar in the Barossa Valley. The winery works with small-scale growers and strives for quality and identity, outside of industrial production. RedHeads wines are often powerful, expressive and made with respect for people and the environment.

For the Blue Belle Shiraz, RedHeads uses grapes from Kangaroo Island, a relatively unknown but promising wine region with a cool maritime climate. The location on the south coast ensures cooling influences from the ocean, which contributes to slow maturation and preservation of freshness in the wine.

The grapes and vinification of RedHeads Blue Belle Shiraz

The RedHeads Blue Belle is made from 100% Shiraz grapes from a select vineyard on Kangaroo Island. The grapes are hand-picked at optimum ripeness. After a gentle crushing, a slow fermentation follows at controlled temperatures to preserve the pure fruit flavours. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, partly new, to develop extra depth and structure without overpowering the fruit.

Tasting notes: colour, aroma and taste of the Blue Belle Shiraz

The Blue Belle Shiraz has a deep ruby red colour with purple hues on the edge. On the nose the wine is aromatic and inviting with notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, violets and a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate it is full and powerful, with ripe black fruit, subtle spiciness and an elegant structure of fine tannins. The finish is long, with a refined balance between fruit, freshness and oak.

Redheads Studio winery is located in South Australia in the town of Tanuda, in the Barossa Valley where the dedicated team behind Redheads work tirelessly, from the vine to the bottle and beyond, to ensure the wines can always be in their best condition drunk.

It all started with a few Aussie winemakers who went to France to show the 'old hands' some new tricks there. Australian wine had conquered the world in the 1970s and 1980s. That's why Tony Laithwaite brought some Aussies to France. It was there that the very beginning of RedHead's new viticultural movement was laid.
In a small shed in McLaren Vale, a former Indian restaurant, some winemakers took on the challenge of making their dream come true: making beautiful, creative wines in small volumes with primary focus on quality.
They wanted to make wines without being bothered by all kinds of business worries, which resulted in an explosion of creativity and experiments.

Meanwhile, winery Redheads is making great international progress and they still give young talents the opportunity to let their creativity and talents loose on the best grapes in the region. Redheads Wines says of itself: “A free-spirited, movement liberating the best grapes from the premium labels to make wines with soul, character and personality”
