Barossa Valley as origin for Shiraz
The Barossa Valley is one of Australia's most iconic wine regions and enjoys global recognition for its Shiraz. Located in South Australia, the region is characterized by warm days, cool nights, and a dry climate. These conditions ensure optimal grape ripeness and a distinct aromatic profile.
The Barossa soils are diverse, including loam, clay, and iron-rich soils. Combined with mature vines, this produces grapes with concentration, depth, and natural balance. Barossa Shiraz is known for its ripe fruit expression, spiciness, and firm structure.
The style of King of Barossa
King of Barossa is intended as a powerful interpretation of Shiraz, showcasing ripeness and intensity. At the same time, balance is sought to avoid the wine feeling ponderous or heavy. The wine reflects the classic Barossa style, with a modern precision in the cellar.
Within the Redheads range, this wine is a clear expression of their vision for Shiraz. Not a restrained style, but a wine that immediately makes its presence felt, without losing sight of finesse.
Grape variety and vineyards
The 2022 Redheads King of Barossa is made from 100% Shiraz. The grapes are sourced from select parcels in the Barossa Valley, where old vines ensure low yields and concentrated fruit.
Careful selection based on ripeness and quality creates a foundation suitable for a wine with power and length. The grapes exhibit a natural balance of sugar, acidity, and phenolic ripeness.
Harvest and vinification
The 2022 harvest took place under warm but controlled conditions, resulting in fully ripe fruit. After arriving at the winery, the grapes were destemmed and fermented with a focus on extraction to ensure the color, aroma, and tannins were fully developed.
During fermentation, regular pigeage and pumping over were used to achieve structure and depth. This approach produces a wine with a firm backbone and ample grip.
Maturation and wood use
After fermentation, the wine matured in oak barrels, with the wood aging designed to enhance the fruit. The oak adds spicy and slightly smoky notes, without overpowering the Shiraz character.
Maturation rounds out the tannins and adds complexity. The wine retains its energy and tension, contributing to a balanced style.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose is intense and concentrated, with aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and plum. There are also notes of spice, black pepper, cocoa, and a hint of vanilla.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with a rich fruit core and firm yet ripe tannins. Dark fruit flavors are supported by spiciness and a subtle oaky note. The finish is long and lingering, with a warm, layered impression.
Structure, style and drinking window
The 2022 Redheads King of Barossa Shiraz is a wine with clear structure and concentration. The tannins provide grip, yet are ripe enough to make the wine accessible even now.
At the same time, the wine possesses sufficient balance to continue to develop in the coming years. With bottle aging, the wine will become more coherent, and the fruit and spicy notes will further integrate.

Wijnhuis
Redheads Studio winery is located in South Australia in the town of Tanuda, in the Barossa Valley where the dedicated team behind Redheads work tirelessly, from the vine to the bottle and beyond, to ensure the wines can always be in their best condition drunk.
It all started with a few Aussie winemakers who went to France to show the 'old hands' some new tricks there. Australian wine had conquered the world in the 1970s and 1980s. That's why Tony Laithwaite brought some Aussies to France. It was there that the very beginning of RedHead's new viticultural movement was laid.
In a small shed in McLaren Vale, a former Indian restaurant, some winemakers took on the challenge of making their dream come true: making beautiful, creative wines in small volumes with primary focus on quality.
They wanted to make wines without being bothered by all kinds of business worries, which resulted in an explosion of creativity and experiments.
Meanwhile, winery Redheads is making great international progress and they still give young talents the opportunity to let their creativity and talents loose on the best grapes in the region. Redheads Wines says of itself: “A free-spirited, movement liberating the best grapes from the premium labels to make wines with soul, character and personality”
