2022 Ossian Verdejo Agricultura Ecologica

The grapes are hand-picked and that is no easy task because this is a very old vineyard (100-160 years) with vines that require getting down on your knees. The wine is cooled after picking and fermented with its own indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine matures in barriques and foudres for 9-12 months and then the Ossian is bottle-aged for a year before it becomes available in small quantities. The Ossian is an expressive Verdejo wine and unique in its kind. White fruit with tropical tones, minerals, a hint of "roasted tones" and a great finish. Extremely stylized, complex nose with wild mushrooms, truffle, biscuit and roasted almonds. Has received 94 Penin points and 93 points from James Suckling. The Ossian is a real Top Verdejo! and Ecological/biological - so tasty but supply is so limited!!

FACT: The single vineyard for the Ossian is not affected by grape louse (pre-Phylloxera) and is therefore so old. This is because the louse moves via a tunnel system in the ground. The soil of the Ossian and Ossian Capitel is so extremely sandy that the louse is unable to dig a tunnel (it then collapses) and that is why these vineyards are so extremely old and still completely authentic. Ossian Winery

Ossian was founded by Javier Zaccagnini, also a partner and director of Aalto in Ribera Del Duero, and Ismael Gazalo, whose family has been making wine in the region for years. Ossian is now owned by the famous Pago de Carraovejas winery, which has continued the trend of making absolute top quality wines. The extremely old Verdejo vineyards are located in the village of 'Nieva' and are 850 metres above sea level. The vines are between 100 and 160 years old, making this the longest certified organic vineyard in Castilla y León. The vineyards are located on sandy soils, which means that Ossian is still made from the original ungrafted authentic vines (so pre-Phylloxera). Ossian does not just make a Rueda like you find in a dozen. No, on the contrary, Javier hired a topoenologist from Burgundy. Together they vinify the small yield unique Verdejo in Burgundian style, just like Pierre does with Chardonnay in Meursault and Puligny Montrachet. In some years a top-top cuvée is made 'Ossian Capitel'. Ossian has grown in a few years to Spain's most respected white wine and internationally also very popular and appreciated.
