About the Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo
Quintaluna is essentially a "second wine" from the renowned Ossian estate, located in southern Rueda. The name Quintaluna is an illusion, referring to the fifth phase of the moon. The estate operates entirely organically, meaning that the phases of the moon must be taken into account. A rigorous selection process in the more than 150-year-old vineyards results in a small quantity of the exclusive Ossian wine, considered the finest white wine in Spain for several years. Javier Zaccagnini, who is also the director of the renowned Aalto vineyard in Ribera del Duero, is the initiator of this mini-project.
Grapes and aging process of the Quintaluna Verdejo from Ossian
The Quintaluna grapes come from a number of very small, sandy vineyards located in northern Segovia. They are planted in sandy soil. Most of them are very old vines from the pre-phylloxera period, ungrafted and preserved because the sandy soil prevented the plague. The vines are therefore over 120 years old, and some even over 180 years old. The hand-harvested grapes are first stored in a cold room to preserve their aromatic qualities. After undergoing a meticulous selection process, they are gently destemmed and pressed. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine remains on its lees (sur lie) in oak barrels and stainless steel for 12 months and is then bottle-aged.
Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo Tasting Notes
Quintaluna expresses the freshness and authentic character of the Verdejo varietal and is certainly not your average Verdejo, but rather an authentic, elegant, and complex wine. Through deliberately low yields, Ossian aims to enhance concentration and varietal character. Ossian's Quintaluna not only renews its image but is a new wine with a new philosophy and another leap in quality. Ossian's "entry-level" wine is no ordinary wine; at Ossian, they are committed to excellence. The expertise is immediately evident. In the glass, this pure 100% Verdejo is a bright straw yellow with beautiful tears. Beautifully ripe citrus fruits dominate the nose, along with notes of green apple and gooseberry. The Quintaluna is very well-balanced with good minerality and finesse. It offers unparalleled value for money.

I also tasted the 2023 Quintaluna, because both 2023 and 2024 were very small crops because of problems with frost, which reduced yields. But the year was cooler, especially after the torrid 2022. The wine is a little more reductive and sharper, with lower alcohol (12.5%), more chalkiness and a long, tasty and dry finish. It is very serious. 46,516 bottles produced. It was bottled during the 2024 summer.
Ossian, the Rueda project from the Pago de Carraovejas group, is building a new winery, studying their soils and improving their range. Production averages 190,000 bottles. 2022 is a very warm and round vintage, but the wines have much more freshness than anticipated; 2023 was cooler but affected by frost and therefore low yielding.

Restrained aromas of chopped herbs, sliced apples and pomelo. Fresh and pretty flavorful, with a medium to full body and a long, lightly phenolic finish. Better with one more year in the bottle.

The 2022 Quintaluna Verdejo comes from Nieva, Segovia, outside the Rueda Denominación de Origen (D.O.). Lightly tropical aromas of pineapple, delicate apple and a hint of waffle highlight the fruit expression. The palate is dry, smooth and moderately compact, offering a creamy, textured mouthfeel with attractive freshness.

Ossian is also jokingly referred to as the White Aalto because Ossian is the mini-project of Javier Zaccagnini, also partner and director of Aalto in Ribera Del Duero, and Ismael Gazalo, whose family has been making wine in the region for years. The extremely old Verdejo vineyards are located in the village of 'Nieva' and are 850 meters above sea level. The vines are between 100 and 160 years old making this the longest certified vineyard in Castilla y León. On Ossian not just any Rueda is made as you will find thirteen in a dozen. No, on the contrary, Javier hired a Burgundian topoenologist. Together they vinify the small yield unique Verdejo in a Burgundian way, just like Pierre does with Chardonnay in Meursault and Puligny Montrachet. In some years a top-top cuvée is made 'Ossian Capitel'. In a few years, Ossian has grown into Spain's most revered white wine.
In 2013, Ossian was bought by José María Ruiz (from the top house Pago de Carraovejas from the Ribera del Duero) and Zaccagnini left the company. Nevertheless, the young winery remains focused on the same high quality standards and there is even more innovation and Ossian is among the absolute top of the Verdejo wines from the Rueda.
