Background of Moss Wood and Ribbon Vale Vineyard

Moss Wood is one of the most respected wineries in Margaret River, Western Australia. Established in 1969 and run by Clare and Keith Mugford since 1984, the estate is known for its dedication to quality and terroir-focused work. In 2000, Moss Wood acquired the nearby Ribbon Vale Vineyard, just one kilometre from the original estate but with a distinctly different character. Ribbon Vale Chardonnay has since become known as an elegant alternative with unique stylistic characteristics.

Location, climate and grape cultivation in Margaret River

Margaret River is located in the south-west of Australia and has a cool maritime climate, similar to Bordeaux. The 2021-2022 growing season was unusual: wet and cool until late in the year, followed by a warm, dry harvest period. The Chardonnay ripened slowly over 123 days from flowering to harvest on 17 March 2022. This slow ripening resulted in an optimal balance between ripe fruit and fresh acidity.

Harvest, vinification and maturation of the 2022 Ribbon Vale Chardonnay

The grapes were hand-picked, then destemmed and pressed as whole bunches. The must was clarified using flotation, a technique that minimizes oxidation and maximizes the freshness of the fruit. Fermentation began in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then continued in French oak barrels (228 liters). For this vintage, 50% new wood was chosen, as the fruit had sufficient intensity to support it. The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and was then aged in barrel for nine months. Bottling took place on January 13, 2023.

Color, aroma and flavor profile of the 2022 Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Chardonnay

The wine shows a bright light straw yellow color with green hues. On the nose it is rich and complex, with aromas of lime, nectarine, peach, marmalade, roasted nuts, vanilla ice cream and subtle toasty oak. On the palate it is full and generous, with flavors of lime, peach, apricot and a hint of caramel. The acidity is fresh and provides liveliness, while the soft tannin feeling and hint of wood support the finish with length and structure.
